As the name implies the flexible pavement are road built in layers, from the sub grade, sub base, base course and asphalt. Each of this layers are compacted thoroughly to remove the air and void in the soil and to attend 100% compaction without moist.

Steps in road construction

The first step to consider when building a road is:

• Geotechnical survey: In this survey the soil will be studied and classified after this process the civil engineer will then design the road showing in the design how the road will be constructed, indicating the portion to cut off and the portion to fill.

• Clearing: The bulldozer is use for this work. The entire area of the road is cleared to give free working space for the surveyor to carryout his setting out.

• Setting out : This is done by a surveyor. From the design, the surveyor will now use his instruments such as the total station, theodolite, ranging poles, measurement tape, pegs, etc to mark out the road alignment.

• Excavation: This is the removal of the unsuitable material and this is done with the help of the excavator. The excavation is done following the surveying details which is indicated on the pegs.

• Filling: The laterite from the borrowed pit is being hauled to filled with the help of dump truck. The grader entered immediately to grade the material and proceeding with the sheep foot compactor.

• Stone base: This is the base course material with the designed grade sizes. It is being compacted with smooth roller compactor.

*Asphalt: This is the final layer of the pavement and it is also the finishing stage of the construction that give the flexible pavement.

Summary

The flexible pavement finishes is with fully compacted asphalt and that is the only thing that make this type of pavement to be different from a rigid pavement.
