[ENG|ESP] Building a stove of mud, stones and recycled cans | Construyendo una estufa de barro, piedras y latas recicladas

Spending lots of time in the forest shelter has been a very interesting experience. However, due to the lack of windows, it gets a bit dark inside and I am far from having the resources to upgrade it yet. Since I want to spend more time in the sunlight I decided to build a mud stove outside and here is the progress I have made so far.

Pasar harto tiempo en el refugio del bosque ha sido una experiencia muy interesante. Sin embargo, debido a la falta de ventanas, el interior se pone un poco oscuro y estoy lejos de tener los recursos para actualizarlo todavía. Como quiero pasar más tiempo a la luz del sol, decidí construir una estufa de barro afuera y aquí está el progreso que he logrado hasta ahora.

Stepping on mud with bare feet is such a therapeutic experience. According to some, being in natural soil without shoes is a highly antioxidant activity. Whether it is medicinal or not, it feels great and better even while listening to some traditional capoeira music and dancing to it on the mud.

Pisar el barro con los pies descalzos es una experiencia muy terapéutica. Según algunos, estar en suelo natural sin zapatos es una actividad altamente antioxidante. Ya sea medicinal o no, se siente genial y mejor incluso mientras escuchas música tradicional de capoeira y la bailas en el barro.

The structure is made of both stones and recycled beer cans. My mom and sisters drink a lot of beer so there's a constant supply of that resource for me 🤣. I can also drink canned beer with a lot less guilt knowing I'll be reusing all of them. I plan to use them as well when I cover the shelter with cob.

La estructura está hecha de piedras y latas de cerveza recicladas. Mi madre y mis hermanas beben mucha cerveza, así que tengo un suministro constante de ese recurso 🤣. También puedo beber cerveza enlatada con mucha menos culpa sabiendo que las reutilizaré todas. Planeo usarlas también cuando cubra el refugio con adobe.

I'm not sure if the structure is going to hold on it's own. To make it sturdier I'm thinking of adding a layer of cob on the outside once it's finished.

No estoy seguro de si la estructura se mantendrá por sí sola. Para hacerlo más resistente, estoy pensando en agregar una capa de adobe en el exterior una vez que esté terminado.

There you can see a bit of the shelter inside. See? It get's quite dark and spending too much time there sometimes gets depressive. I hope to be able to make more light enter there sometime soon. I've seen a system where they put a bottle with water in the roof and the light enters, dispersing through the whole room. Looking forward to trying that out.

That opening is to introduce the wood. I didn't have any iron bars which would have been ideal to place as a sort of grill that lets the ashes fall to the ground. Instead, I'll just be placing some lines made of little stones.

Esa apertura es para introducir la leña. No tenía barras de hierro que hubieran sido ideales para colocar como una especie de parrilla que deja caer las cenizas al suelo. En cambio, solo colocaré algunas líneas hechas de pequeñas piedras.

The mixture of mud was forest soil, sand, and ashes. I have no idea of how well it will hold up, but I honestly don't care too much. If it breaks or something I'll just repair it with a better mixture each time until I get it right. All materials are reusable or compostable so screw it 😅.

La mezcla de barro era suelo de bosque, arena y cenizas. No tengo idea de qué tan bien aguantará, pero honestamente no me importa demasiado. Si se rompe o algo, lo repararé con una mezcla mejor cada vez hasta que lo haga bien. Todos los materiales son reutilizables o compostables, así que no me importa nada 😅.

The idea is to make it even taller and have some vents so that the heat can go out to those sitting nearby.
