[ENG|ESP] Forest Shelter Compilation - Progress so Far | Compilación Avances Refugio en el Bosque

On August 14, I published my first post about the forest shelter I was building. From that moment I started to occasionally visit the place, twice a month or so. Lately I've been practically living there, or go to stay every other night, simply because I love being there with all that vegetation and the singing of the birds. Today I decided to make a small compilation of what the process has been, and wow, it has evolved in unexpected ways.

El 14 de agosto publiqué mi primera publicación sobre el refugio forestal que estaba construyendo. A partir de ese momento comencé a visitar el lugar de vez en cuando, aproximadamente dos veces al mes. Últimamente he estado prácticamente viviendo ahí, o quedandome noche por medio, simplemente porque me encanta estar ahí con toda esa vegetación y el canto de los pájaros. Hoy decidí hacer una pequeña recopilación de cómo ha sido el proceso y su evolución queue igual me sorprende.

As I was gathering materials, the voice of a friend sounded in my head saying: "you always build things where only you fit". And that inspired me to go for a larger area where I could put a bed for two. I had all these pillars gathered and started spacing them out.

Mientras recolectaba materiales, la voz de una amiga sonaba en mi cabeza diciendo: "siempre construyes cosas donde sólo cabes tu". Eso me inspiró a buscar un área más grande donde pudiera poner una cama para dos. Reuní todos estos pilares y comencé a espaciarlos.

I thought then: "hey, why not make this big enough for some furniture, some places to store dried herbs, and perhaps even another small bed?". So I distanced the pillars a bit more and got to this.

Entonces pensé: "oye, ¿por qué no hacer esto lo suficientemente grande para algunos muebles, algunos lugares para almacenar hierbas secas y tal vez incluso otra cama pequeña?". Así que distancié un poco más los pilares y llegué a esto.

My idea was that by having some sturdy pillars in place, you could just play around with the rest of the structure. However, I tried keeping it orderly... for a while.

Mi idea era que al tener algunos pilares resistentes en su lugar, podrías simplemente jugar con el resto de la estructura. Sin embargo, intenté mantenerlo ordenado... por un tiempo.

When I got to this point, it started getting hard to find straight branches and I had gathered a lot of twisted or crooked ones.

Cuando llegué a este punto, comenzó a ser difícil encontrar ramas rectas y había reunido muchas torcidas o torcidas.

Things weren't looking so tidy anymore and it was taking a very long time to search for branches that were straight. And I decided to just go with the flow:

I started hammering branches wherever they could fit and let the building take a life of it's own.

At times it looked a lot less visually attractive than I had begun to imagine, and thinking about the amount of work needed to make it a habitable place kind of dragged my mood down, making me anxious. At this point I considered giving up quite a few times though today I'm grateful that I didn't.

A veces parecía mucho menos atractivo visualmente de lo que había empezado a imaginar, y pensar en la cantidad de trabajo necesario para convertirlo en un lugar habitable me deprimia un poco, me ponía ansioso. Consideré rendirme varias veces, aunque hoy estoy agradecido de no haberlo hecho.

I started crossing some big branches on top to get an idea of what the roof would be like.

Empecé a cruzar unas ramas grandes en la parte superior para tener una idea de cómo sería el techo.

It started to look ok, but I was worried that the inclination wouldn't be enough. I figured that if that happened I could just play with the amount of grass squares I put on top and create new angles that way, so I proceeded.

Empezó a verse bien, pero me preocupaba que la inclinación no fuera suficiente. Pensé que si eso pasaba podría jugar con la cantidad de champas de pasto que ponía en la parte superior y crear nuevos ángulos de esa manera, así que procedí.

Branches kept falling into place and this arch at the entrance was formed very naturally, it was almost as if it was meant to be that way.

Las ramas seguían cayendo en su lugar y este arco en la entrada se formó de manera muy natural, era casi como si estuviera destinado a ser de esa manera.

It started to look better! I would really like for the final design to allow these branches to be seen.

¡Empezó a verse mejor! Realmente me gustaría que el diseño final permitiera ver estas ramas.

I put the central pillar after I had the branches that were the roof structure... Is that legal?

I've had a lot of work gathering lumps of grass and soil to put on the rooftop. It's been worth it as I've been able to stay dry during heavy rains.

He tenido mucho trabajo recogiendo champas de pasto para poner en la techo. Ha valido la pena porque he podido mantenerme seco durante las fuertes lluvias.

That's pretty much what I have left to cover but I've been lazy about it and focused on other things. Any time soon I'll do it 😅

Eso es más o menos lo que me queda por cubrir, pero me ha dado flojera y me he centrado en otras cosas. En cualquier momento pronto lo haré 😅

And a look from inside with the roof all set up. This picture was taken by a friend. It was looking rather nice to this point and it would be cool to not add anything else, but the weather here doesn't allow it. It's necessary to be sheltered as much as possible as the winter is pretty harsh.

Y una mirada desde el interior con el techo todo listo. Esta foto fue tomada por una amiga. Se veía bastante bien hasta este punto y sería genial no agregar nada más, pero el clima aquí no lo permite. Es necesario estar lo más protegido posible ya que el invierno es bastante duro.

I couldn't find the pictures where I was beginning to cover up the shelter with plastic and geotextile, only this one which was kind of finished. I didn't concern myself with aesthetics, just wanted to protect myself from the cold as quickly as possible.

No pude encontrar las fotos en las que comenzaba a tapar el refugio con plástico y geotextil, solo esta que estaba un poco terminada. No me preocupaba la estética, solo quería protegerme del frío lo más rápido posible.

I know it looks messy and not very pretty, but it't functional. I know it will get better in time, so no worries. I think many who claim they want to live off the land and protect Nature stumble on the point that things take time to build. They want the same comfort as they have in capitalism immediately and you can't get that here unless you have enough money to buy it. So, if you want to live in tune with Nature you must learn to go slow and one step at a time, staying strong even when things don't look so good.

Sé que se ve desordenado y no muy bonito, pero no es funcional. Sé que mejorará con el tiempo, así que no me preocupa. Creo que muchos de los que afirman que quieren vivir de la tierra y proteger la naturaleza tropiezan con el hecho de que la construcción de las cosas lleva tiempo. Quieren la misma comodidad que tienen en el capitalismo de inmediato y no se puede obtener aquí a menos que tenga suficiente dinero para comprarlo. Entonces, si quieres vivir en sintonía con la Naturaleza debes aprender a ir despacio y paso a paso, manteniéndote fuerte incluso cuando las cosas no se ven tan bien.

Things started to look each time more like a home. A place to really live in.

Las cosas empezaron a parecerse cada vez más a un hogar. Un lugar para vivir de verdad.

My mother had this old shower curtain and I nailed it there. Doesn't give it such a worthy aspect yet, but at least it's an improvement! I have some tapestry I could add, but I think I'm just going to be patient and wait till I can cover with cob.

Mi madre tenía esta vieja cortina de baño y la clavé allí. No le da un aspecto tan digno todavía, ¡pero al menos es una mejora! Tengo un tapiz que podría agregar, pero creo que voy a ser paciente y esperar hasta que pueda cubrirlo con adobe.

Little by little, I go adding things that make it visually more attractive, such as these gifts I received from friends.

The first nights I slept on the floor with a couple of old couch cushions and a plastic over them since they had been exposed to rain for a while. It wasn't the most comfortable, but I survived.

Las primeras noches dormí en el suelo con un par de cojines de sofá viejos y un plástico encima, ya que habían estado expuestos a la lluvia durante un tiempo. No fue el más cómodo, pero sobreviví.

I think this was one of my first fires with the shelter closed up. The warmth of the embers kept the place at a very pĺeasant temperature through the night, despite the cold outside.

Creo que este fue uno de mis primeros fuegos con el refugio cerrado. El calor de las brasas mantuvo el lugar a una temperatura muy agradable durante la noche, a pesar del frío del exterior.

It was very pleasant to see the branches lit by the fire, an old and familiar feeling, a sort of journey to the past. There is a calling to go back to simplicity in many of us and I think it's just a matter of taking the leap. I'm sure most people have access to the land in some way, whether through family, friends, romantic partners, etc.

Fue muy agradable ver las ramas iluminadas por el fuego, un sentimiento antiguo y familiar, una especie de viaje al pasado. Hay un llamado a volver a la simplicidad en much-s de nosotr-s y creo que es solo una cuestión de dar el salto. Estoy seguro de que la mayoría de las personas tienen acceso a la tierra de alguna manera, ya sea a través de familiares, amigos, parejas románticas, etc.

After sleeping for some time on the floor my body started to resent it, thankfully a bed idea came up while playing with some branches. See the post here.

Another picture of the bed. I think it can still become a lot more comfortable, but it's not bad at all. I sleep pretty well through the night so I'm happy with the results.

That was a proud day when I went through my first heavy rain. I hadn't accumulated any firewood and I really needed some heat, but at least I wasn't getting wet. I had to go out with my poncho and look for deadwood to start a fire, which I managed to pull off nicely. Spent the rest of the day drinking hot liquids and being by the fireplace.

Ese fue un día orgulloso cuando pasé por mi primera lluvia intensa. No había acumulado leña y realmente necesitaba un poco de calor, pero al menos no me estaba mojando. Tuve que salir con mi poncho y buscar palos muertos para encender un fuego, que logré sostener muy bien. Pasé el resto del día tomando líquidos calientes y estando junto a la hoguera.

Now that I have a closed placed to sleep in and be warm, I've begun working outside because I need to receive more sunlight during the day. I'll make a room for some benches and already picked up a few recycled windows so that plenty of light will come in. Here I will be able to cook and share with visits so that eventually this place becomes a bit more dynamic.

Ahora que tengo un lugar cerrado para dormir y estar abrigado, comencé a trabajar afuera porque necesito recibir más luz solar durante el día. Haré espacio para unos bancos y ya conseguí algunas ventanas recicladas para que entre mucha luz. Aquí podré cocinar y compartir con las visitas para que eventualmente este lugar se vuelva un poco más dinámico.
