Do you believe that kindness will bring you good luck?
This is interesting. I believe in ‘luck’ but I see it as something that stands on its own. It “often” has nothing to do with anything else – it exists independently.
You’re probably familiar with the saying, “Time and chance happens to us all.” It means life’s outcomes are often influenced by factors beyond our control. Luck does not care about your status – whether you’re a Harvard graduate or uneducated; rich or poor; bad or good; hardworking or not. If it chooses you, then bam! You have won the lottery.
People would often argue that you can do things that might increase your luck or ‘chances’. They would say, if you work harder than anyone else and outperform everyone around you, there’s a higher possibility that life will favor you or that influential people will recognize your efforts and reward you accordingly. However, many of us have worked harder and probably gone above and beyond what was expected, only to be met with ignorance, or lack of recognition, or worse - being taken advantage of. So, I really don’t think we can do anything to court luck.
I believe that pretty much answers the question but to add to it, kindness is simply what it is. Some people are genuinely kind, while others aspire to be kind, earning admiration because of it. Sometimes, their kindness attracts others, and they may even be rewarded for it. You may say that’s luck but, I just don’t see the relevance.
Also, doing good things rarely benefits us directly. I mean, it’s certainly good for us, especially those around us, and I swear I’m not suggesting anyone to stop being kind. However, kindness can put us in a vulnerable spot making us easy targets for those who take advantage of others – a truly unpleasant reality. Being kind is risky business but I'd say it's by far the best investment.
There’s probably a reason why we normally wish others good ‘luck’ – because deep down, we recognize the stark reality we are up against.
