Is being shameless a good thing?
This is a tough one, as the word 'shameless' often carries a negative connotation. However, in some situations, it can reflect confidence or bold audacity.
Let’s get granular: what does ‘shameless’ mean? As described in the post, it’s often associated with having a thick skin—showing no shame, embarrassment, or guilt for actions typically deemed improper, socially inappropriate, or just outright wrong.
Additionally, being shameless can sometimes be a tool for those determined to achieve their goals—whether it’s snagging the last slice of pizza at the office or pursuing a big client to seal the deal. I believe this is what people call audacity—or is it confidence? Either way, these individuals see it as a useful strategy, and it seems to work every time.
Now, is being shameless a good thing? That’s a bit tricky. What’s considered good can vary. Sometimes, what’s good for you might not seem good to others, like taking the last slice of pizza (I assure you, I have nothing against taking the last slice) or relentlessly pursuing a client for the benefit of your company. And just because you’ve done those things doesn’t mean you’re a shameless person overall—it obviously doesn’t define your entire personality. It could simply mean you were really hungry at the time or that you’re doing the job you signed up for or whatever it is.
However, when it comes to situations where you're doing things that offend others—actions that are socially inappropriate—and you feel no guilt or embarrassment, that's where things go sideways. It’s far from being a good thing. It is never a good thing. How can it be good when everyone despises you for it? It’s certainly a surefire way to ruin your reputation and social relationships. Essentially, no one will want to be around you. That’s awful.
To close, being shameless isn't entirely bad if it's done within reason and doesn’t cross or go too far beyond the line of propriety. I mean, I could be shameless if I know I’m reasonably justified in doing so.
Interesting thoughts.
