If you cultivate flowers in one bigha of land, the profit is around 40 thousand rupees. If you make paddy, the loss is three to four thousand rupees. That is why Rafiqul Islam, a farmer from Jhikargachha in Jessore, is increasing flower cultivation year after year. He used to cultivate flowers in only three bighas of land five years ago, now it has exceeded 12 bighas.

The Bangladesh Tariff Commission prepared a report in 2015 on the country's flower market and export potential. According to the report, a farmer earns Tk 25 lakh a year by cultivating jarbera on one acre of land. Apart from this, farmers can make a profit of two lakh rupees for rose cultivation, one lakh rupees for marigold cultivation and one lakh rupees for gladiolus cultivation.Rafiqul Islam, a florist in Jessore, said he lost Tk 3,000 to Tk 4,000 per bigha by planting boro paddy last year. So this year he has reduced paddy from 10 bighas to 5 bighas. The remaining five bighas have been leased. He said flower cultivation is much more profitable than paddy. So many farmers of Jessore like him are now growing flowers.President of Bangladesh Flower Society Abdur Rahim told Prothom Alo that the farmers of the country have been perfect in cultivating flowers like tuberose, rose, marigold and chrysanthemum for a long time. Now gerberas, imported-alternative flowers like gladiolus are blooming in their land. Even orchids are being planted in the country. So now we don't have to import from Malaysia or Thailand.

Abdur Rahim said that the import of jarbera has come down drastically since two years ago. And the import of gladiolus has been stopped for almost 10 years. Farmers of this country have been producing gladiolus seeds since 2006. Attempts are now being made to produce gerbera seeds. Some firms are now also producing orchids.
DIRD Group, a garment trader, has set up an orchid farm in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, called Dipta Orchids.
Now the size of that farm is about 22 acres. The orchids produced there are supplied to five-star hotels in Dhaka and hotels in Cox's Bazar, said Tanvir Hossain, an employee of the company's marketing department. "Imported orchids are sold for Rs 30 or more each," he said. And we can sell it for 20-25 rupees. '
Recently, an e-commerce site called 'Desifulful.com' has been developed. They are delivering flowers to the elite areas of Dhaka with online orders.
