I wrote the novel Putroe Neng in 2010 and a year later it was published by Grasindo, a publisher in the Kompas Gramedia Group which is the largest publisher in Indonesia. Until now, Putroe Neng is my most talked about novel and is still sought after by readers. Unfortunately, Grasindo hasn't reissued it yet.

I heard the story of Putroe Neng for the first time around 1991 from old people in Bireuen, Aceh. They tell the story of a girl from China who has 100 husbands. All the men who married Putroe Neng died on the first night because Putroe Neng's genitals contained poison. Instead of considering it a myth, at that time the story of Putroe Neng was considered a true story.

“Putroe Neng's grave is in Blang Pulo (Lhok Seumawe). The grave of Shia Hudam is also there," is the affirmation I've heard. Sheikh Shia Hudam is Putroe Neng's 100th husband who survived the first night and the following nights until he became the last husband of the beautiful slanted-eyed woman.

Having been a journalist since 1997, I heard Putroe Neng's story again in short discussions with local historians and fellow journalists. Putroe Neng really does exist. However, the story of his marriage reaching 100, is just a myth. Who is her husband, is not known for sure. Complete references to Putroe Neng are difficult to obtain. From the various references that I have collected, only Putroe Neng's first husband is mentioned, namely Meurah Johan who is also the founder of the Darud Donya Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam.

Every time I cross Jalan Medan – Banda Aceh in Blang Pulo Village, Lhok Seumawe, Aceh, I often see Putroe Neng's grave and think about the secret stories that are stored in it. There is a story of a white silhouette seen in photographs taken at the tomb, although I have never seen one. There is also a mention, that there is a shadow of Putroe Neng seen in the photos taken at the tomb complex. It is even added that the view of the figure in the photo can move left and right according to the movement of the photo.

The whole story was confirmed by Cut Hasan (now dead), the caretaker of the tomb I met with Masriadi, a journalist in Lhok Seumawe. In late 2009, we interviewed Cut Hasan at Putroe Neng's Tomb. When I sat in front of the tomb listening to Putroe Neng's story, Dimas, Masriadi's nickname, was about to snap a picture from across the grave. Cut Hasan's wrinkled hands immediately shot up; "Wait a minute! Don't take photos carelessly. The risk is if you don't get sick, you die!"

No matter how excessive it sounds, Dimas' hand immediately stops like a robot pressed by the power button. Dimas was shriveled. But when I had a conversation with Cut Hasan, he started taking pictures and there were no more restrictions. After the photo was finished, we did not see Putroe Neng's silhouette in it. Nearly a hundred photographs were taken by Dimas, including those at the Tomb of Sheikh Shia Hudam in the south. Everything looks as beautiful as the original color.

Cut Hasan's statement is the same as the myth that I have heard so far, that Putroe Neng has 100 husbands. But when I asked about his grave, Cut Hasan said only the tomb of Syiah Hudam was known.

Putroe's real name is Nian Nio Liang Khie who comes from China. He entered Aceh with thousands of Chinese female soldiers around 1024 and founded the Seudu Kingdom with the capital of Panton Bie (some mention Canton Lee) which is now part of the Aceh Besar District. Then, after converting to Islam and marrying Meurah Johan or Sultan Johan Syah as the founder of the Darud Donya Aceh Darussalam Kingdom, Nian Nio Liang Khie is better known as Putroe Neng.

According to Cut Hasan, Syiah Hudam did not die on the first night because he was able to expel the venom from Putroe Neng's genitals before having sex. The poison is put in a small bamboo container, then cut into two. "One part is thrown into the sea, and the other part is thrown into the mountain," said Cut Hasan.

Putroe Neng is indeed full of myths. Acehnese cultural observer, Syamsuddin Jalil, is of the opinion that it is not true that Putroe Neng has 100 husbands. "But it's just an illustration that Putroe Neng has defeated 100 men on the battlefield," said Syamsuddin, who is familiarly called Ayah Panton.

The same thing was conveyed by Ali Akbar, the former head of the Education and Culture Office of North Aceh Regency who has written several history books, including mentioning Putroe Neng. I interviewed Ali Akbar before writing Putroe Neng's novel. I also interviewed Acehnese historian and painter, Sayid Dahlan, and he also said the same thing.

Putroe Neng's grave area is about 20 x 20 meters. It is surrounded by 12-star fruit trees and 14 areca nut trees, as well as one breadfruit tree. Of course, all these trees did not grow during Putroe Neng's life. With that many trees, it is not surprising that every morning many leaves fall.

Inside the complex, there are many tombs. Around 11 tombs including Putroe Neng on the west side, and five tombs on the east side. "On the east side, they are the graves of the habits, scholars of the past," said Cut Hasan, who claimed to have received the news from a dream. The father of seven children and a dozen grandchildren also had a dream about Putroe Neng. The next morning, he found a parallelogram-shaped gold chip not far from his house, which is next to Putroe Neng's tomb. He had time to describe the shape of the gold pieces in my notebook.

PROBABLY it is full of myths, it is difficult to get references about Putroe Neng. The existing books only tell of the arrival of thousands of female soldiers led by Admiral Liang Khie who attacked the Indra Jaya Kingdom and then attacked Indra Purba.

The references only mention the general story, there is no strong data about 100 husbands of Putroe Neng. Prof. Ali Hasjmy in Meurah Johan Sultan First Aceh admitted that some of the characters in the story are fictional. Some parts of Mahmud Ibrahim's book, Mujahid Dataran Gayo, are similar to Ali Hasjmy's description but do not mention that the names in them are fiction.

Even in Putroe Neng's novel, I continue Prof. Ali Hasjmy's imagination by adjusting the names of the characters. There are names that are actually more “male”, but are used as female names so I renew my imagination regarding some names and places. However, I still retain some of the names of the characters that actually feel very "modern".[]

Melanjutkan Imajinasi: Kisah di Balik Penulisan Novel Putroe Neng

Saya menulis novel Putroe Neng pada 2010 dan setahun kemudian novel itu diterbitkan Grasindo, penerbit dalam Grup Kompas Gramedia yang merupakan penerbit terbesar di Indonesia. Sampai saat ini, Putroe Neng adalah novel karya saya yang paling sering dibicarakan dan masih dicari pembaca. Sayangnya, Grasindo belum menerbitkan ulang.

Saya mendengar kisah Putroe Neng pertama kali sekitar 1991 dari orang-orang tua di Bireuen, Aceh. Mereka mengisahkan tentang seorang gadis dari China yang mempunyai 100 suami. Semua lelaki yang mengawini Putroe Neng meninggal dunia pada malam pertama karena kemaluan Putroe Neng mengandung racun. Alih-alih menganggapnya sebagai mitos, waktu itu kisah Putroe Neng dianggap sebagai kisah nyata.

“Kuburan Putroe Neng ada di Blang Pulo (Lhok Seumawe). Kuburan Syiah Hudam juga ada di sana,” demikian penegasan yang pernah saya dengar. Syekh Syiah Hudam adalah suami ke-100 dari Putroe Neng yang selamat pada malam pertama dan malam-malam berikutnya hingga ia menjadi suami terakhir dari perempuan cantik bermata sipit tersebut.

Setelah menjadi jurnalis sejak 1997, saya mendengar kembali kisah Putroe Neng dalam beberapa diskusi singkat dengan sejarawan lokal dan sesama jurnalis. Putroe Neng memang benar ada. Namun, kisah tentang perkawinannya yang mencapai 100, hanyalah mitos. Siapa saja suaminya, tidak diketahui pasti. Referensi tentang Putroe Neng secara lengkap sulit diperoleh. Dari berbagai referensi yang saya kumpulkan, hanya disebutkan suami Putroe Neng yang pertama, yakni Meurah Johan yang juga pendiri Kerajaan Darud Donya Aceh Darussalam.

Setiap melintasi Jalan Medan – Banda Aceh di Desa Blang Pulo, Lhok Seumawe, Aceh, saya sering melihat makam Putroe Neng dan berpikir tentang sejumlah kisah rahasia yang tersimpan di dalamnya. Ada kisah tentang siluet putih yang terlihat dalam foto-foto yang dibuat di makam tersebut, kendati saya tidak pernah melihatnya. Ada juga yang menyebutkan, ada bayangan Putroe Neng yang terlihat dalam foto-foto yang dijepret di komplek makam. Bahkan ditambahkan juga kalau pandangan sosok dalam foto itu bisa bergerak ke kiri dan kanan sesuai dengan gerakan foto.

Seluruh cerita itu, dibenarkan Cut Hasan (kini sudah meninggal), penjaga makam yang saya temui bersama Masriadi, seorang jurnalis di Lhok Seumawe. Pada akhir 2009, kami mewawancarai Cut Hasan di Makam Putroe Neng. Ketika saya duduk di depan makam sambil mendengar kisah Putroe Neng, Dimas, panggilan akrab Masriadi, hendak menjepret dari seberang makam. Tangan keriput Cut Hasan langsung terangkat ke atas; “Tunggu dulu! Tidak boleh sembarangan mengambil foto. Risikonya kalau tidak sakit, ya mati!”

Seberapa pun terdengar berlebihan, tangan Dimas langsung terhenti bagai robot yang ditekan tombol powernya. Dimas sempat ciut. Namun ketika saya terlibat percakapan dengan Cut Hasan, dia mulai mengambil gambar dan tidak ada larangan lagi. Setelah foto tersebut jadi, kami tidak melihat ada siluet Putroe Neng di dalamnya. Hampir seratus lembar foto dijepret Dimas termasuk di Makam Syekh Syiah Hudam di sebelah selatan. Semuanya terlihat seindah warna aslinya.

Penuturan Cut Hasan sama seperti mitos yang saya dengar selama ini, bahwa Putroe Neng mempunyai 100 suami. Namun ketika saya tanyakan makamnya, Cut Hasan mengatakan hanya makam Syiah Hudam yang diketahui letaknya.

Putroe memiliki nama asli Nian Nio Liang Khie yang berasal dari China. Dia masuk ke Aceh bersama ribuan prajurit perempuan China sekitar 1024 dan mendirikan Kerajaan Seudu dengan ibukota Panton Bie (sebagian menyebutkan Kanton Lee) yang sekarang masuk wilayah Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Kemudian, setelah masuk Islam dan menikah dengan Meurah Johan atau Sultan Johan Syah selaku pendiri Kerajaan Darud Donya Aceh Darussalam, Nian Nio Liang Khie lebih dikenal sebagai Putroe Neng.

Menurut Cut Hasan, Syiah Hudam tidak meninggal pada malam pertama karena mampu mengeluarkan bisa dari kemaluan Putroe Neng sebelum berhubungan intim. Racun tersebut dimasukkan ke dalam sebuah wadah bambu kecil, kemudian dipotong menjadi dua. “Satu bagian dibuang ke laut, dan satu bagian lagi dibuang ke gunung,” tutur Cut Hasan.

Putroe Neng memang sarat dengan mitos. Pengamat budaya Aceh, Syamsuddin Jalil, berpendapat tidak benar Putroe Neng mempunyai 100 suami. “Tapi itu sebagai gambaran saja bahwa Putroe Neng sudah mengalahkan 100 pria di medan pertempuran,” ujar Syamsuddin yang akrab disapa Ayah Panton.

Hal senada disampaikan Ali Akbar, mantan kepala Dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Kabupaten Aceh Utara yang pernah menulis beberapa buku sejarah, termasuk menyinggung tentang Putroe Neng. Sejarawan sekaligus pelukis Aceh, Sayid Dahlan, juga menuturkan hal senada.

Areal makam Putroe Neng berukuran sekitar 20 x 20 meter. Dikelilingi 12 batang pohong belimbing dan 14 batang pohon pinang, serta satu batang pohon sukun. Tentu saja semua pohon tersebut tidak tumbuh di masa Putroe Neng hidup. Dengan jumlah pohon sebanyak itu, tidak heran bila setiap pagi banyak dedaunan berguguran.

Di dalam komplek tersebut, terdapat banyak makam. Sekitar 11 makam termasuk Putroe Neng di sisi barat, dan lima makam di sisi timur. “Untuk di sisi timur, itu makam para habib, ulama di masa lalu,” kata Cut Hasan yang mengaku mendapatkan kabar itu dari mimpinya. Ayah tujuh anak dan belasan cucu itu juga pernah bermimpi tentang Putroe Neng. Paginya, ia mendapatkan kepingan emas berbentuk jajaran genjang tak jauh dari rumahnya yang bersebelahan dengan makam Putroe Neng. Ia sempat melukiskan bentuk kepingan emas tersebut di buku catatan saya.

BARANGKALI karena sarat mitos itulah, sulit mendapatkan referensi tentang Putroe Neng. Buku-buku yang ada hanya menceritakan kedatangan ribuan tentara perempuan pimpinan Laksamana Liang Khie yang menyerang Kerajaan Indra Jaya dan kemudian menyerang Indra Purba. Referensi yang ada hanya menyebutkan kisah secara umum saja, tidak ada data kuat tentang 100 suami Putroe Neng. Prof Ali Hasjmy dalam Meurah Johan Sultan Pertama Aceh mengaku sebagian tokoh dalam kisah tersebut adalah fiktif. Beberapa bagian dari buku Mahmud Ibrahim, Mujahid Dataran Tinggi Gayo, tak beda dengan keterangan Ali Hasjmy, tetapi tidak menyebutkan bahwa nama-nama di dalamnya adalah rekaan semata.

Dalam novel Putroe Neng ini pun, saya melanjutkan imajinasi Prof Ali Hasjmy dengan beberapa penyesuaian nama tokoh. Ada nama yang sebenarnya lebih “lelaki”, tapi digunakan sebagai nama perempuan sehingga saya memperbaharui imajinasi menyangkut beberapa nama dan tempat. Namun, saya tetap mempertahankan beberapa nama tokoh yang sesungguhnya terasa sangat “moderen”.
