RE: Contest | 25-Word Comment - Monkey Business | Memories
Memory has to do with the mind, it is the ability to remember, store and retain experiences. Some of such memories come with humor, while others are the reverse.
Childhood memories have a way of sticking with me, not only because of them being mostly hilarious, but also because of some lessons learned which have moulded me.
One of such memories engraved in my mind involves a coconut tree, my grandmother, and a good dose of overdosed confidence.
One beautiful morning, grandma proposed cooking coconut rice as a delicacy for the day, and I was in support of her cooking that mouth-watering delicacy.
All the ingredients were readily available except for the main ingredient, which was the coconut fruit. Grandma hesitated for a bit, considering that there was no one available to climb the coconut tree situated just at the middle of the compound.
I was not going to let that become a reason as to why I wouldn't eat what I was already salivating for. I even insisted that I was going to climb the tree, reminding her of the other trees I had climbed in that compound, projecting a confidence only a carefree child could muster.
“I can do this,” I declared, beating my chest. “A girl can do whatever she wants to do if she puts her mind to it!” My grandmother chuckled, and asked me to go ahead.
I quickly wore my trousers as it a rule to always climb trees with trousers. Fueled by pride and determination, I began my ascension. The rough bark of the tree pined against my palms, but I pressed on, energized by my earlier proclamation. To my delight, I reached the top without much trouble, plucking the coconuts with a satisfied grin. I dropped them one by one, each landing with a satisfying thud on the soft ground below.
And then came the hardest path. Getting down suddenly became so difficult, I wrapped my hands tightly around the tree with my body and legs trembling trying to figure out my next move. It was not a funny ordeal at all. The once easily scaled tree became a dreadful mountain. I was awkwardly hanging suspended in the air.
After struggling for a while, I finally shouted "mma, mma ....." till I was able to get her attention and asked for help.
My grandma came out of the house letting out a wild laugh and walked down to access the situation. She teased, “Oh, so a girl can do whatever she wants, eh?” I made sure not to reply and step by step she guided me gently, holding out her hands to ensure a safe landing.
Phew! I quickly sighed with relief. That day has etched its mark in the minds of my family members as they still tease me at family gatherings. It is indeed a memory.
I invite @clarvin @eveetim @bluelavender
Wow.
I love your determination! And how you chose not to reply😅
If it was me, she just see my face and immediately not say anything more. The frustration that would have flooded my whole body.
Nice story
Thank you @bluelavender for reading through. It was really an ordeal .
Esto fue una gran experiencia, subir y bajar de cocotero no es fácil, la altura es terrible. Me imagino el susto, pero luego lo paso disfrutando de un delicioso arroz con coco, con el rico sazón de la abuela. Travesuras de niño jejeje.
Thanks for stopping by @tahispadron
Grandma's coconut rice was worth the adventure.
Nice memories.
You're absolutely right. Well done and thanks for the invitation.
Kenangan yang indah, lucu, penuh inspirasi bersama neneknya, ini pasti kenangan yang tidak bisa dilupakan.
