Dairy game/12th June 2023/ Working on a public holiday

Today was declared public holiday, but guess what, community Pharmacists has no public holiday 😓. Well the reason is very clear, we work for the community and every 24 hours patients come to the communication pharmacy outlet looking for medications and pharmaceutical care.

So this beautiful Monday got me dressed in my peach color shirt and decently long black skirt in my smart cover to work.

I arrived as early as 9am in the morning. The traffic congestion on the road wouldn't let me be earlier than that. Good thing I arrived and was all set for work.

Not even 5 minutes after I arrived, a client was already waiting to be attended to by a Pharmacist. Gratefully, I was available at the time.
He had his complaint about the side effects of steroids he took for some months now.

Well, in great affirmation, I used the medium to tell him the possible side effects of steroids which includes weight gain, bone marrow depression, immune system suppression, increase in blood pressure and the likes especially when taken over a long period of time.

---

The man has been on steroids for over a year plus according to him, was prescribed for severe pains, seasonal asthmatic attack and some other hormonal malfunction in his body.

Well as health care providers, we all know that steroids aren't stopped abruptly. The doses are often tapered, that's with gradual reduction of dose till it's completely stopped.

Abrupt discontinuation of steroids after taking for a really long time I'm the case of this man can lead to withdrawal syndrome.

---

So after giving him the needed patient counsel, I advised that he get to his doctor who had prescribed it, discuss the side effects he is experiencing and then the doctor would decide how and what dose to taper the drug to.

He was so happy with the warm reception he received, and promised to get back to me with the doctor's decision.

---

Other clients came in to refill their prescriptions, get new ones while others too went in for our cosmetics product.

Infact during a session with one of my clients today, she objected that collagen doesn't get fully absorbed in the skin so it is best taken systemically (oral route). Well we learn everyday and we never stop learning, so I assured her I'll do more research on that and get back to her as soon as I did.

Cosmetology has always been an interesting part for me back in college and is still the same now. I'm really excited that I have something to research on.

Bit by bit, seconds kept turning into minutes, minutes into hours and it was already time for me to leave my workplace while attending to other matters.

I'm glad I could render needed service to humanity as a health worker, even on public holidays.
