Rage against the Un-engaged : Bringing Commenting back to steemit - #engagerage

in Be Awesome5 years ago

Over the past few months, the distribution of wealth here has gotten better and post quality may have improved. Development is coming along on multiple fronts. The one area we seem to be slacking is in engagement.

I used to get 20 meaningful comments on each post, even when I was making a fraction of what I make now. This is partially my fault because it's been really hard for me to be involved at the platform when I'm also starting my business and working on art projects. But it seems like this is not just something that's happening to me. Look at the posts on the trending page. Many of them have less than 10 comments, some have less than 5. The only posts that seem to generate any discussion are the ones that impact the whole platform or that get tagged in all of our feeds. We need to change this.

Those of you who know me know I am always throwing ideas out into the ether. I like to start rather casual initiatives that can move beyond me and my own methods of accomplishing them. Some of these initiatives catch on. Some do not. I hope this one does. #nobidbots and #deadpost were huge success and I hope this can be similar to #nobidbots. Just an idea to spread and encourage others to do the same.

#engagerage

A bit cheesy, I know, but whatever. It's just a tag

I joined The Beast over at Whaleshares, commenting ...what was it....25, 50 times a day? It was awesome but it was insane. I had to take a break for 2 months afterwards. I also do not see any reason why this should be a big production or need monetary rewards. This is a do-unto-others thing.

I think we should pledge to comment on a certain number of posts every day from users outside of the ones we check up on daily. Everyone can make their own pledge, the only thing I think we should agree on is that we read and comment with something somewhat meaningful or intelligent. Please use my pledge as a model if you like.

I'm personally going to pledge to comment on 5 posts a day from users that I have not commented on in a week or longer. Of these at least 2 will be users whose names I do not recognize. I'll try to go over this but this is my minimum average per day (I'll catch up when I miss a day).

The reason I chose 5 is that 0 comments makes me feel like crap, 1-3 comments makes me feel like I have awesome friends (@ryivhnn you rock!) but don't reach anyone else. 5 comments makes me feel like I exist outside of my tiny circle. 10-20 is ideal but not necessary! So I want to set the minimum at the number I feel will make me feel connected to the community.

It doesn't have to feel like work. Let it feel like a game. Just think, if we all start replying to 5 posts a day from a variety of users, the whole place will feel much more like a community!

Share your own pledges down in the comments, post using the #engagerage tag if you are participating, and lastly, and lastly, feel free to join and post in the Be Awesome community if the description resonates with you. At the very least I will read every post posted there.

Just a reminder that @ecotrain continues to manually curate AND COMMENT - I personally make in the 10-15-20 comments most days, and I know @eco-alex does a lot too. Our little ecotrain corner of steem is thriving.

We don't need hashtags... sorry. If everyone gives a nice UPVOTE and response to the comments on their own posts, it starts working all by itself.

Agree with the sentiments, but would add that comments are stimulated by great posts that people WANT to comment on. ANY POST that starts with "Dear steemians..." is already a problem.

More energy into better posts is a pivotal part of the equation.

Well maybe I just need to engage with the right people then ;-) It does seem you guys have really great engagement. I should get more involved.

Great posts are half of the equation, the other half is being involved with people who are involved. There are a lot of people who aren't involved and I'd like to encourage them to do so. Some are already writing great posts

It's true. The tags shoot people in the foot. Tagging for palnet doesnt bring comments or engagement. But tagging #gardening #parenting #homeschooling etc draws passionate people out of the woodwork.

I should add that logging in to this post was SO CUMBERSOME that I almost didn't bother to comment. It's a pain in the butt constantly logging in to different front ends and DETERS engagement, especially from the less technically adept.

Please also notice I have one steemian who UPVOTES every comment I make... LOL...

That's an autovote :-P

Right exactly. And he gets tiny weeny curation rewards 24/7.

who IS that anyways! why would someone do it!?

hahaha... I guess for the stagering curation rewards. Maybe he fancies me? All I know is he is German. :)

ahahahah what did I just watch <3 It got me going!

Pledges, plights, praise breaks, all of them enthusiastic collective movements with positive shaking vibes & hopes that everyone notice we exist through cool Shoutin Music. True engagement & interaction through the highest rhythmic cadences.

No wonder It got you going! Hahahaha

obviously i know just what you are talking about,. I remeber the days when i was struggling to keep up with comments, easily 30 on a post..

my opinion is that the bulk of those who remain here are really Only interested in getting upvotes and rewards for posting.. whereas before we had a much more diverse and engaged audience who got higher rewards than is possible now.. then HF20 sealed the deal by adding RC limits so most people with low SP cant even comment much!

I personally think we wont see engagement come back until Steem moons a bit and then people come back with a renewed passion.. In the meantime the best we can do is engage with others ourselves.. or try to encourage people.. I do my best, but these days welcome the reduced computer time and also reading time as a welcomed by product / upside.

Hahaha, looking for meaningful comments... In Today's World very few are creative insane. Rest is just a crowd. Sophisticated and we'll oiled machine. You need to throw in the money and it generates interaction.

Not lying. Just wait till the STEEM goes up. The interaction will also go up. It's so bad that even trolls have left the platform. But in a way it's good too. Because only the people with vision and some personal goal stayed. Because they were here even when the STEEM was almost nothing.

We may have different opinions on this topic but I totally agree with you on one point.

@ryivhnn rocks

Yeah, the herd mentality is exactly that...put money in and they come. But I think fewer and fewer people are herd creatures and you know I wanna make it a friendly place for all the other animals in the forest.

:-D she rocks!

But the harsh reality is that no such place exists. Sooner or later the any system gives up to greed. Same is with STEEM system. The vision is gone and whats left is a shell or what it was. Many are there who still are in the system but with the hopes of better payout.

But then again if you want to stand out of the crowd, you have to STAND OUT of the crowd. That's what I am doing. Earning here is secondary objective for me. Primary is building relationships and knowing more people who can guide me.

Aaaaaahhhhhhh [hides] XD

You do indeed have awesome friends but I question my rockability XP I'm just doing my normal thing (except for the last couple of days where I was flat out with stuff and didn't x_x but on the bright side I recharged).

I'm seriously bad at pledges, is it okay if I just keep doing my thing? :D

If you are normal (which we know you are not) then you are the BEST at being normal. But you are not so you are the best at whatever it is you are doing which, I don't really understand either, I just know it's awesome and I love it and you add so much to the world even if its by accident!
