in Business Activity3 years ago (edited)

On this occasion, the Barista Academy moved to rural areas, together with some members of the Anzoategui State Coffee Producers Association to train their associated producers in new coffee growing techniques. They were two very exciting days, meeting producers, visiting farms, imparting theoretical and practical knowledge, the latter that we all like. If you want to know more about the activity we carry out, I invite you to continue reading our new publication.

Steemit Coffee Lovers, as we mentioned in the introduction we told you that a few days ago we were contacted by the directive of the Association of Coffee Producers of the Anzoategui State of Venezuela to direct a series of technical courses that we will be giving in the five producing municipalities of coffee from our Anzoategui state. As all those who follow us will have already noticed that our company is in charge of training people throughout the coffee production chain, alluding to our slogan that says: “We train you throughout the coffee chain, from the seed to the cup”.

This agro-production chain includes primary production in the field, benefit processes or post-harvest processes for commercial quality coffees or for high quality coffees, as well as, as you already know, we train Baristas, roasters, threshers, tasters, among others.

Day 1:

Once we accepted the proposal, we moved with a team from Barcelona (which is the capital of the state), to the town called Mundo Nuevo, it was approximately 3 hours of travel, which was very enjoyable, as it served to develop the strategies that we would apply. to carry out the activity successfully. In addition, they told us about the coffee plantation renovation plans that were being carried out in the sector, replacing old plantations of varieties susceptible to rust (a very malignant disease) with plants of more productive varieties resistant to pests and diseases. Once we got to Mundo Nuevo, it was time to transfer vehicles, as we were heading towards the mountainous area where the hunts that house the coffee producers are located.

We moved to the hunt called Las Piedras, which is located up the mountain about 30 minutes from the new world, to be able to climb we had to do it in all-terrain vehicles, because the roads in this area are dirt and a little deteriorated, luckily it did not rain, which facilitated the transfer. Once we started to climb, the change in climate and the decrease in temperature was noticeable, very pleasant by the way, approximately between 15 and 16 °C, also, we began to observe vegetable plantations and many coffee plants. In Las Piedras, a group of producers of approximately 80 people was waiting for us, between men and women, we were really shocked to notice the leading role that women are playing as a leader in terms of the organization and as a coffee producer in this area. Once we arrive, we install the equipment to start the technical training.

There were approximately 6 hours of courses, where we talked about the latest techniques for the production of seedlings and coffee nurseries, also, we talked about the techniques for pruning that would allow to increase the production of quintals per hectare of this crop. Finally, we talked about the most modern methods for the control of pests and diseases, which we would reinforce on the second day with a visit to the plantations. All the information provided based on the management of coffees in an organic and environmentally friendly way, an aspect that we want to highlight because, within the vision of barista academy is conservationism, agroecology and permaculture.

Once we finished, we went to the farm of one of the producers where we would rest and where we would be teaching the second day of courses, but this time, the practical part or called field practice, which is the one that everyone loves.

We would also like to tell you a little about this farm, it is located in the hunt called El Bucare, approximately 1400 meters above sea level, this name comes from a tree that is used to shade coffee plants. . In this farm, the cultivation of coffee of many varieties is developed, such as Typicas, Bourbones, Catuai and some hybrids such as Catimores and Sarchimores. They also develop the cultivation of vegetables such as tomatoes and others. They also have all the equipment for the benefit of coffee beans.

Day 2:

We woke up very early, very cold and something that could not be missing, a delicious cup of hot coffee. We took advantage of this moment to talk with the owners of this farm about some of the problems that are experienced in rural areas of Venezuela. Also, as in any visit to the field, listen to the jokes and traditional stories that exist in each rural area of the country and in which the entire peasant family participates and enjoys telling. We also take the opportunity to enjoy the rich climate and mountain ecosystem that can only be found in the mountain ranges of our country. I open a parenthesis to recommend this type of visit to the agricultural areas of each country, it is very exciting to know where, how and when the food that we eat daily in our homes is grown.

After breakfast some producers were already starting to join to start the practice day. An hour later, we went for a walk around the farm, observing the phytosanitary status of the plantation, showing the producers some of the agronomic management errors that were being made, as well as some pests and diseases present. As part of the training, we take the opportunity to offer the solution to each aspect.

Then, we carried out the practice of making coffee seedlings, where some producers participated and enjoyed jokes and anecdotes. In this case we use a seed of a very productive coffee variety resistant to diseases such as coffee rust. This variety is called Monte Claro and it is one of the varieties that producers are liking the most due to its earliness, seed size, quality of flavors and aromas in the cup, high production and low bearing of its architecture, which greatly facilitates handling. agronomic of the plantation. Once finished, we went out to visit some nearby farms, to observe their coffee nurseries and once given some technical recommendations, I finished the day, taking the respective group photo and toasting with an exquisite cup of coffee produced and processed there. Something that caught my attention in this producing area is that many banana plants are grown in association with coffee plants, this can be seen in most of the photographs, something that positions it as a banana area in our state. Also, something that characterizes the people of this region is their affection and kindness to the people who visit them.

Hours later we began the return trip to the capital city, very tired but satisfied with the success of the work carried out, hoping soon to visit other areas of the 5 where coffee is grown in our state.

It is interesting, it is not only a course, it is a complete training, from the seed to the coffee. Incredible, all the information processing so valuable. I am struck by the practice of making coffee seedlings, a lot to learn in this tour, for us who are educating ourselves about all the good things they bring to us.

Interesting trip. I can only imagine the pleasant smell of coffee. Thank you for sharing your journey in this coffee and banana farm.
