Examination malpractice refers to any act of dishonesty or unethical as it is committed in an examination under the favor one or many. It encroaches on the principles of fairness and credibility being in the education system. Common forms of this malpractice include cheating, impersonation, leakage of questions of examination and using prohibited material during exams. Not only does it hurt individual's integrity but the entire institutes that banks money from students' and teachers work for the sake of education do get devalued too. To address this problem we need the contributions of educators, students and policymakers for the development of honesty and accountability in academic assessments.

Yes, examination malpractice has bad consequences for the individual, educational institution and the society generally. Here are some of the key consequences:

Loss of Integrity: Students who violate the school morality become dishonest and work without hard work.

Devaluation of Certificates: It makes the job market less likely for real graduates to put trust in, as the educational qualifications lose their credibility.

Hindered Learning: Malpractice replaces studying, so that knowledge and skills are simply out of reach.

Punitive Actions: They get severe punishments, such as an expulsion, law suits, or being banned from taking further examinations.

Impact on National Development: Malpractice on workers’ education adversely affects a country’s overall growth and development.

Erosion of Trust: The reason why examination malpractice damages the reputation of institutions and the education system all together is examination malpractice means content that get passed without due diligence.

These consequences are symptomatic of the implications of dealing with this issue, the future of education and society.

Have you ever engaged in this practice, or do you know someone (a student) who engaged in this?

I have never done any examination malpractice but I have seen somebody that did.

While in college, I found myself next to a student who attempted to cheat during last exam. sheets of paper with formulas, she had written these and put these in her pencil case. She would discreetly look at them from time to time as the exam progressed, as the invigilator wasn’t looking. I recall feeling bad as she watched me knowing that it wasn’t fair to the ones who had sacrificed to study hard.

Unfortunately, her actions were not unnoted. She got caught red handed by the invigilator and the papers were confiscated. The college asked her to immediately leave the hall and she was disciplined as a result. To get a sense of what these meant, it was a subtle reminder that silly shenanigans come with consequences and can negate everything you’ve spent a large amount of time working for, namely your academic future.

There are different people who take different ways to cheat in exams for different reasons. Here are some common ways and the underlying reasons:

Ways People Cheat in Exams:

Bringing Unauthorized Materials: Notes written, cheat sheets used, little bits of paper buried in clothes, pens or calculators.

Impersonation: Taking the exam on behalf of someone else.

Using Technology: Putting things in, like smartwatches, earphones or smartphones, to see if you can fiddle your way into some answers or communicate somehow with other people.

Copying: Checking another student’s answer sheet during the exam.

Leaking Questions: Scoring access to exam questions before hand by unethical means.

Collaborating: Passing notes, or whispering to pass answers.

Fabricating Answers: Answers to written on desks, palms or on shoes.

Causes of Cheating:

Pressure to Succeed: Fear of being disliked and not being approved of, fear of not achieving what others expect from us.

Lack of Preparation: If they're not prepared because they're poor at time management or are much too bad at procrastination, they may cheat.

Competition: To compete in the most competitive markets.

Poor Teaching Methods: When they are not given proper teaching, students malpractice.

Lack of Consequences: This makes a weak enforcement of rules, or minimal penalty, to encourage cheating.

Low Self-Confidence: Some rely on dishonest methods since they believe they can’t succeed alone.

Promotion of honesty and fairness in education is a fight against these causes.

Strategies for curtailing the increase in examination malpractice's have to be done by educators, educational institutions and policymakers. Here are some effective ways:

Strict Examination Rules: Strict guidelines which are then implemented and enforced to students during exams discourage them from cheating.

Use of Technology: An effective disclosure of malpractice can be done with introduction of technology such as CCTV cameras and biometric verification.

Educating Students: Indeed, the idea of insisting on the right thing and making the public realize the wrong of cheating can all be enumerated for changing our minds.

Adequate Preparation Time: It allows students enough time and resource to prepare for the exams in order to reduce paying to cheat.

Improved Teaching Methods: If the teachers are assured that areas of teaching are well covered and the students have grasped topics to be studied, then malpractice will be suppressed.

Penalties for Offenders: The malpractice usually should be dealt with severe and credible consequences, which are supposed to be imposed on any offender.

Randomized Question Papers: Holding several sets of question paper means the student will be unable to share answers among themselves.

Involving Parents: Government should also ensure that parents encourage their children to study, and at home, proper ethical standards should be encouraged to reduces malpractice.

Through these measures, we get the essence to establish a fair and more trustworthy education system.

Examination Malpractice proves how dishonest a person seems to be, and this results from pressure from you, a colleague who got involved in this and was rusticated for this act, Students need to be advised on this so they won't be a victim of exclusion.

I also blame parents who are always so busy to check if their children are reading or not. Imagine a child coming home with first position, but can't spell even 3 letter words.

Yeah, Malpractice is unethical way of passing yourself or getting marks in exam with illegal ways.

  • These practices can be stopped with actions like suspending students and reappearing in the exam with double fees. Installing cameras and increasing control in examination halls.
