What is your opinion after understanding the subject matter provided in this course on teacher self-evaluation using SWOT analysis techniques?

SWOT is an acronym that stands for Strength Weakness Opportunity and Threats. These are Techniques used to assess a Teacher's teaching skills.

  • Strength

It helps a Teacher to understand and know their various skills and Talents which will help in effective students management. For instance the way I teach my Students and they understand me is totally different from the way another Teacher handles a Class. A teacher's strength can be the ability to Communicate and explain something to the students and they would understand effectively, while another teacher can use pictures, practicals to teach students and they would understand effectively. As a Teacher, discovering and knowing your strength will help to make students understand effectively and perform better.

  • Weakness

This refers to the Teacher's problem. Human beings are different and they have different weaknesses. One teacher's weakness can be different from another teacher weakness. As Teachers, knowing our weaknesses will help us to work towards improving them and thereby making learning interesting and enjoyable for students.

  • Opportunity

This emphasizes on the Training and Seminars a Teacher needs to attend inorder to improve him or herself. For example a Teacher can attend Seminars inorder to adapt and improve to teaching with Technology.

  • Threats

These are challenges, difficulties and threats faced in the Educational system, but in Secondary and Tertiary level. These usually cause a strain in learning. The ability to create a solution or coping mechanism for these threats will go a long way in improving the Student's learning.

Evaluate your teaching activities so far using SWOT analysis techniques, identifying as many of your strengths and weaknesses as possible?

As a Teacher, some of my Strengths includes the following.

  • Effective Communication

I have the ability to communicate my lesson to the student in such a way that they understand. Whenever I'm teaching, I usually use examples, images and stories to relay my lesson and this helps my students to enjoy and understand in my Class.

  • Expertise

I'm very good in my field of expertises and I have the required knowledge to teach my Course.

  • Interaction

I also have the ability to make my class interactive and in which everyone participates and say something. During my Class, I usually ask questions and ask my Students to contribute their own views to the topic I'm teaching and this helps to make my Class enjoyable.

  • Good relationship

I also have a good relationship with my students such that they confide in me, tell me things that they don't tell other Teachers.

  • Listening skills

I also have the ability to listen to my students and find out what the problem is, give them advice and make sure that they follow my instructions.

Weakness

As Human, we don't have it all, some of my weakness as a Teacher includes the following.

  • Confidence

I'm a shy person, and sometimes I lack Confidence while teaching especially when I'm teaching a class for the first time or when I make a mistake with a pronunciation.

  • Effective time management

I do digress a lot because I love telling Students stories and due to this, most times I found it quite hard to cover my Course outline and this usually makes me to rush my Scheme of Work.

  • Controlling large amount of students.

Sometimes it usually gets overwhelming for me, having to teach a large number of Students. Sometimes I can't control them all and this results to some hearing me and others not hearing me and this usually results to noise in the class.

Evaluate your teaching activities so far using the SWOT analysis technique, identify as many opportunities and threats as possible? 3 Points
  • Opportunity

Technology has really helped to make Learning more easier for Students and teaching much easier for Teachers. For example, I can use a Projector and Laptop to teach Students especially when it comes to explaining images and practicals to them. I also utilize Platforms like YouTube to learn things that I don't understand inorder to be able to teach my students well.

  • Threats

  • Unconducive teaching Environment

Currently, the School where I teach the environment is not conducive for teaching. The Classes I teach they're no ceilings on the roof, they're no fans and Windows and this makes the Classroom very hot during dry season and very hot during rainy season. This makes teaching uncomfortable.

  • Inadequate Teaching equipment

I teach in a Rural School and they lack adequate teaching equipment and this causes strain on my Teaching.

After using the SWOT analysis technique, then what is the follow-up plan that you will do in the future, What are your priorities?

As Human beings, we learn everyday and everything we do is to keep improving and getting better day by day. In other to improve on my weakness, I would attend Seminars, Workshops, training and Mentorship programs that would help me to improve on my weakness.

My priorities would be the following.

  • Engage in public speaking inorder to improve on my Confidence level and be able to talk to my Students effectively without being shy.

  • I would also attend Seminars that emphasizes on training Teachers on how to take control of the Classroom and manage the Class effectively.

  • I would also learn how to use and manage time effectively whenever I'm in the Class in order to ensure that I cover my Course outline effectively without rushing it.

For the Threats, I would work with the School Head to ensure that the Government provides adequate Teaching equipment and also renovate the Classroom in order to making teaching and Learning Conducive. Thank you for reading my post. I invite @dasudi, @m-fdo and @wilmer1998 to participate in this contest.
