Having seen week 1 of the Steemit engagement challenge for season 19 where we have 4 teaching teams and going through the different courses organized by the various teams including ours which was the lesson plan we have come up with a more effective way as teachers on how this knowledge can be properly transferred to our students.

In the first week, we talked about lesson plans and what must be contained in a lesson plan. We also looked at the different ways or methods in which one can teach and in the homework we also noticed that many students didn't understand what the method of teaching is all about.

Methods of teaching include lecture method, demonstration method, discussion method, experimental method, gamification method, etc. Maybe in subsequent lectures, we will expose you to how they work so that you choose the most suitable for you which will give you maximum output when teaching.

Micro Teaching

Having discussed our observations and a little summary of the previous knowledge, we want to bring our minds to this week's topic which is Micro Teaching. Someone will want to ask what is Micro Teaching.

Micro-teaching in education is the first teaching step a teacher is supposed to take before he or she goes to the wider audience or classroom. As the name implies micro Teaching, is a form of teaching where the teacher has a small class, with a small number of students ideally not more than 10, and he or she is given 15-20 minutes at maximum to deliver his or her lecture or to teach the class.

Now, it is expected that the teacher uses the said time to cover all that is in his or her lesson plan for that period. So micro Teaching is used to check how a teacher can firstly stand before the audience and educate them about a particular topic effectively (this includes classroom management) and also it is used to check how teachers can manage the limited time given to them for their work.

Also, you don't need to cover too much when teaching as it won't do any good to the students who are trying to learn from you. You have to take things bit by bit considering the category of students you are trying to teach.

Aims & objectives of Micro-teaching

  • Designing a lesson plan (structural)
  • Managing Classroom or any place you find yourself as a leader
  • Removing stage fright
  • Using allocated time properly

Since we are on Steemit, you will see and notice nice teaching when you see people having much interest in the subject matter and also when you see much participation in a given contest. So let's consider a sample lesson plan for a teacher who wants to carry out micro-teaching.

Sample of lesson plan for Micro Teaching (Mathematics)

Subject:Mathematics
Topic:Number Identification
Time:15 Minutes
Objectives:Pupils should be able to identify numbers before the end of the lesson
Instructional Materials:Stones, sticks chalkboard
Previous knowledge:Here you have to remind students about the last thing you taught them and then see if they remember
Introduction:Here the teacher introduces the lesson by using any means that he or she feels will communicate his message much better
Presentation:You present the lesson to the students or pupils step by step and ensure that they understand before you proceed. Example Step 1: Definition of Numbers. Step 2: Identification of numbers 1-9 etc
Summary/Conclusion:Here the teacher summarises his teaching by asking the students or pupils certain questions and even giving them some tasks to do. Example Define and identify the numbers 1-9
Summary and conclusions

Before teaching, you must have a target audience and you must know their capacity. Also, you must always have a method that you know or believe will help you to pass the message to your students more clearly.

The Micro Teaching approach is the first step which helps you to first, remove stage fright, compose your class, pass your knowledge to your students, and also manage the time allocated to you.

So when you come into the classroom, you don't have to stand behind the pulpit or move to the back of the students and stand while you teach. You need to always move around. This will make all the students feel your presence in the class and they will maintain more order and pay attention to you.

Homework

  1. Assuming you are given a class to carry out Micro Teaching and you have 20 minutes to do this. Using the sample of the lesson plan above prepare a lesson plan. (Take note of the presentation and conclusion columns and present the needed information in them at least 150 words)

  2. Still on assumption, while teaching your students what are the steps you took to ensure they are focused on hearing you, and if for any reason there was a distraction how were you able to tackle the issue?

  3. Recall that you have 20 minutes assigned to you to deliver your lecture or to teach the students, how were you able to manage the time? Share with us how you managed the allocated time.
