Let’s get started!

What are the main sources of air pollution in our environment?
Brick kilns, different vehicles, industrial factories, and construction work are all making Bangladesh’s air pollution very serious. There are thousands of kilns operating in Dhaka and surrounding regions that are non-legal. They are fueled by coal and wood. These released carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide that are harmful gases. These gases not only poison the air, but it also destroys the land and water as well.
Vehicles at Chashara |
---|
Every day, the vehicles in Dhaka and Chittagong are increasing. Most of these old and smoke like crazy. The situation is also further aggravated by poor maintenance of buses and CNGs.
Another big reason for air pollution are factories. Release of toxic gases - such as ammonia and nitrogen oxides. Breaking concrete and other materials increase the problem because it releases more dust into the air.
In villages leftover crops and hay burned on fields contributes to creating smokes which pollute the air. In rural areas cooking with wood and coal is quite common. While villages are less polluted by air than cities, air pollution still has bad influence on people and environment.
How does air pollution affect human health, especially vulnerable groups like children and the elderly?
Children and elderly people more vulnerable. Children’s lungs and immune systems aren’t fully developed, so they can get sicker from polluted air. The air in cities has dangerous particles and gases which can cause breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis in many children.
Air pollution is very dangerous for elderly people. Their bodies are weaker, they often already have illnesses, like heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. It makes their health worse and can cause heart attacks, strokes and breathing problems. The problem is more prevalent in cities where air is polluted much more than villages.
What are some common symptoms or health issues caused by exposure to polluted air?
Many health problems can develop from breathing polluted air. Symptoms may include coughing, difficulty breathing and throat irritation. Inhaling these harmful particles can lead to headaches, tiredness and even eye reports.

People who breathe polluted air for a long time have weak lungs. They may eventually get very sick, susceptible to asthma, bronchitis or even lung cancer. It can also go into the bloodstream and damage the heart causing heart attacks or strokes. Polluted air often kills children and elderly people from common infections such as pneumonia.
How can individuals contribute to reducing air pollution in their daily lives?
Small changes in ourdaily life can help reduce air pollution by everyone. First, stop burning plastic or trash that emits toxic smoke. However, most people in Bangladesh still burn waste openly, which has to stop.
Using Public Transport :Train |
---|
Avoid private vehicles as much as we can. Try to walk, use cycle, public transport, instead. If you have vehicle make sure of this good maintenance and of less smoke coming out.

Another way to improve air quality is simply by planting trees. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air and makes oxygen. Plant trees around our house or be a part of community based tree planting programs. Cleanliness of our surrounding and fuel and electricity wastage also help in reducing pollution.
How does air pollution vary between urban and rural areas?
Air pollution in the villages and cities in Bangladesh are different. The main causes in Dhaka and Chittagong are vehicle smoke, brick kilns and construction dust. The air in cities is bad for us to breathe in and full of more harmful particles and chemicals.
In villages the main causes are burning leftover crops and using wood or coal for cooking. There are less factories and vehicles so the air is cleaner in village. However, dust in the air still makes it difficult for villagers to breathe during dry seasons.
Electric Stove at our Village Home |

It needs better technology to reduce air pollution and stricter rules in cities. For villages, people should heat their cooking using cleaner cooking and alternative fuels. Together as a community, we can make all the difference everywhere and raise awareness.
