Haemoglobin

Hello to the community!

It's good to be here in the Healthy community, because as Lord Buddha said "Health is the greatest gift".

A few days ago, I attended a political discussion and heard something related to life. Until Sri Lanka is economically bankrupt, most of us don't care about how politics and economics affect our lives. Just like that, it's essential to care about our Health and application of related theories to our lives before it's too late. That's when I saw an informative contest about Haemoglobin from friend @khursheedanwar.

First I will simply tell you what it is! Haemoglobin is a protein in our red blood cells that serves a specific function. It contains in all vertebrates except one fish family, and in some other living organisms as well. You know, in one red blood cell there can be billions of HB. The reason of blood is red is, having an iron in the core of HB.

The importance of haemoglobin count in the body?

Simply it's the Oxygen transporter of our body. It takes the Oxygen from the lungs and distributes it throughout the body ensuring that every cell is properly functioning. And on the other hand, it delivers back Carbon dioxide as well. Typically HB can transport up to 1.34 mL of O2 per gram. Therefore HB count is a crucial factor for our health and efficiency.

The doctors use this count as a measure to identify potential health issues and the flow of Oxygen is at the optimum level. If the HB count is less than the standards, its sole purpose of Oxygen transportation can be irregular. This condition is called anemia and with that lack of energy, tiredness, shortness of breath, and other health issues can occur This can be caused due to internal/external blood loss, bad food habits, cancer, infection, genes, etc.

On the other hand, increasing this count than the standard can be an issue as well. It can most probably lead to a high amount of red blood cells, named polycythemia. Mainly this is genetic and can cause cancer, lung diseases, hydration, and heart diseases.

Normal range of HB in males and females

A blood test can be done to check the Normal Hemoglobin Levels. It can vary according to gender, the method and place of testing, and age. Anyway, that's why the standards have a certain range. According to the results, men tend to have a higher level than women mainly due to having muscles and testosterone which accelerates the red blood cells creation.

  • For Males: typically 13.6 to 17.7 grams per deciliter (g/dL)
  • For Females: generally 12.1 to 15.1 grams per deciliter (g/dL)

So, as you see Haemoglobin level is very critical to our body and health. So, taking care of it is always come in handy..

Thank you once again for hosting this nice contest. I invite @sachisewwandi, @senehasa, @simonnwigwe to the contest!

Hemoglobin contains iron, which helps us obtain oxygen from the air we breathe and transport it throughout our bodies. It's also responsible for the color of red blood cells.
You did justice to this topic, and I appreciate you inviting me.
