Wound Care
In our daily activities, we may unconsciously injure ourselves if safety precautions are not taken by us. When we sustain an injury or wound, it may become a chronic wound if we don't properly care for the wound. So, in this post, I will write about wounds and how to care for wounds properly. Let's know a little about wounds before we learn how to care for wounds.
THINGS THAT MAY MAKE WOUNDS CHRONIC
- Wounds may become chronic, that's, it may refuse to heal in time if there is an immobile pressure on the wound that restricts the flow of blood.
- Wounds may become chronic if the source is of deep burn
- If a person who is wounded is a diabetic patient, it may take a long time for his wound to heal
- Infections may cause wounds to delay healing
HEALING PROCESS OF WOUNDS
There are patterns that wounds on the skin follow to healing, and we are about to learn these patterns or processes;
The first pattern that wounds follow to be healed is known as the inflammatory stage: at this stage, the blood vessels of the injured areas become tight; immediately after this, platelets, which are clotting cells, gather around the wounded area to activate clotting. Once clotting occurs, blood vessels around the wounded areas expand to cause maximum flow of blood to the wound. When blood flows to the wound, white blood cells would also flow to the wound to kill things that may cause infection, like microbes.
The second pattern that wounds follow to healing is known as the fibroblastic stage or pattern: this stage or process has to do with the growth of collagen, which is a fiber that forms from protein to strengthen the skin. When collagen grows around the wounded areas of the skin, it causes the wound to be tightened(elge-shrink), therefore reducing its size.
The final stage or pattern is known as maturation stage: this stage has to do with further growth of collagen for healing, and on this stage, the scar would form, but it doesn't mean the wound is completely healed. This calls for proper care. Let's now see how to care for wounds.
CARE FOR WOUNDS
- CLEANING: We have to clean the wounds in a very soft and gentle way. When we clean the wounds, we are removing dirt and things that may later infect the wound.
- I will suggest someone who is wounded should inject tetanus.
- Dead skins are to be removed, and this is better done surgically.
- When a person has a very big wound, the wound ought to be closed by stitches or staples.
- Dressing the injured areas: The wound is to be dressed, and depending on the type of wound, the dressing may be moist.
- A person who is wounded has to take a pain reliever as prescribed by his doctor to prevent the blood vessels from constricting, thereby delaying the healing process.
- Infections should be treated if there are signs of any by taking antibiotics. It's necessary.
- A person who is wounded has to review his drugs; if he is taking anti-inflammatories and steroids, he should discontinue because these can interfere with the healing process.
- If a person who is wounded has medical conditions such as anemia, he has to treat such because it can interfere with the healing process.
- Finally, having enough rest contributes to fast healing.
Let's now see how we can care for ourselves for our wounds to be healed quickly.
SELF-CARE FOR WOUNDS
- Don't take drugs the doctor says you should not take, drugs such as anti-inflammatory
- we have to eat fine
- we have to eat foods that are enriched with vitamin C
- we have to properly dress our wounds
- we should not use antiseptic creams
- we have to exercise regularly to facilitate blood flow
- we should not smoke, and we should manage other medical conditions such as diabetes.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
You're right my friend, sometimes we get silly wounds and refuse to take good care of it.
It will become a serious case for you, myself have been a victims of such incident and i will make sure to avoid it because i went through hell.
Taking a pain relief and relaxing our body will help in taking care of our wound.
You have written really well in this contest and i wish you the best.
Thank you very much, dear friend, for your nice contribution. Yes, we need to be meticulous in this harmattan season to avoid getting ourselves injured or wounded.
