Research on 'CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS'
Good day wonderful steemit community. As my first time posting in this community , I will really love to talk about something meaningful. Today, I will be sharing with you guys the results of my research on the plant cymbopogon citratus.
WHAT IT IS!
Cymbopogon citratus commonly known as lemon grass, barbed wire grass, malabar grass or fever grass is a plant found in Africa, Asia and some tropical islands.
It grows in a wide variety of soil and has a lemon like smell. Some people use it in soups and pottages . However, in Nigeria it's most common use is as a tea..
However, it is good for us to consider the following question. Is drinking lemon grass tea beneficial or detrimental to our health?
Is Lemongrass Tea Beneficial or Detrimental?
Lemon grass tea contains a compound called CITRAL. Researchers believe that citral helps to lower blood pressure. It does this through a process called Vasodilation . Here, the blood vessels are enlarged resulting in a better blood flow and lower blood pressure.
Lemon grass tea also contains potassium; a chemical helpful in regulating blood pressure. Drinking it in the morning on an empty stomach helps to reduce bad cholesterol in the body.
If you are looking for a way to reduce belly fat, lemongrass tea is a good option. It boosts digestion and fat burning especially in the abdominal area. It also helps to clear the toxins in the body reducing bloating.
Lastly, Animal and laboratory research shows that lemon grass tea has Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
When taken in a large quantity, lemon grass can cause an upset stomach, frequent urination and even diarrhea.
Some people may also experience allergic reactions on the skin like rashes and irritation or itching.
NOTE:Pregnant women and people undergoing chemotherapy should avoid lemon grass as it may interfere with some chemotherapeutic agents. Furthermore, it has been observed in rats that intake of large quantities of lemon grass caused birth defects. This is why pregnant women are advised to avoid it.
Overall, lemon grass tea is a healthy and refreshing natural tea. Take it daily and tell us your experience in the comments section.
