Switching Flights With Checked Bags

Airline MYTHS.png

A common problem for passengers who want to change flights is the presence of checked bags. If you checked your bag then an airline representative may deny you the option of switching flights at your connection point.

The excuse? “We will be unable to get you and your bag onto the new flight, and you must travel with your bag. It’s a security issue.”

The truth: The airline wants passengers to travel with their bags in all scenarios. Keeping passengers and bags together is just good practice. Every time a passenger is separated from luggage there is a cost to the airline. Taking lost baggage claims and delivering bags to passengers away from the airport costs money. So yes, the airline typically will not allow passengers to change flights unless they will be able to transfer their luggage onto the new flight as well.

The cutoff time to switch flights will vary by airline and airport. It is easier to track and move bags efficiently in smaller airports, or airports where the airline only has a few flights. It will be more difficult to track baggage in larger hub airports where the airline operates hundreds of flights.

You already know that bags and passengers get separated all the time. Sometimes bags even end up on earlier flights and beat their owners to the destination. Obviously, there is no requirement for bags to travel with their passenger on the same flight. (This is different on international destinations. If you are crossing international borders, the airline does need to make sure that a bag does not get on a plane without its owner also on the plane)

Your solution: Your best bet for all travel is to travel light with carry-on luggage only. This will make switching flights much easier, as the airline won’t have to worry about finding your bag and getting it on a new flight.

Make sure you have the baggage claim ticket available for the airline agent who is assisting you. That will help them track your bag quicker. You should also have a good description of your bag. It helps if you have something on the bag that will make it stand out. I.E. Neon Tape, Large Name Tag, Ribbons etc.

If you do check bags, ask to get your flight switched as soon as possible. This will give the airline more time to track your luggage and hopefully get it moved to a new flight with you. You can also ask for an airline representative to track your luggage to see if it has been forwarded on an earlier flight. If your bag is traveling earlier then you should be able to go with it!

Don’t lie about having checked luggage. If you claim to have no checked bags to the airline agent, they will quickly figure out that you did check luggage with a few keystrokes on the computer. That will hurt your chances of getting on an earlier flight.

You can offer to return to the airport and grab your bag if it comes in later, but most airline agents will not switch your flight without first getting your bag moved.

If you do want to switch flights and you have checked luggage that will often be an option for you. Make sure you are polite to the airline agent assisting you with the change, a little kindness from the customer always makes the agent more willing to assist!
