Today's Environment News Alertenvironmentindia (46)in India Speaks • 7 months ago (edited)◆ The Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has issued a draft notification declaring one-kilometre area from the boundaries of the Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kangra district as an eco-sensitive zone. ◆ Villages in Odisha’s Sundargarh district are embracing principles of bioeconomy by repurposing farm waste generated on the paddy fields, as raw material to cultivate mushrooms and produce vermicompost. ◆ A report of the Director General of Audit (Central) has sought an explanation from the Forest Department over the formation of the Forest Society for Conservation. ◆ While it is promising that a plant species has been documented in India for the first time from Chirang Reserve Forest in Assam, unfortunately, the bad news is that the plant Amblyanthopsis burmanica is under pressure due to habitat destruction and researchers could only find less than 10 individuals growing scattered in a 20 sq km area. ◆ At least 10 tigers have died in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu, India. Six tiger cubs starved to death, two adult tigers died due to infighting, two tigers were poisoned, and the accused has been arrested.
