Plagiarism is one of the most important concepts every content creator must understand. With the ease at which information can be gotten on the internet, it's almost impossible to curb plagiarism.

Often times people use contents from other creators without proper credits to the owner. As a result of this, the content owner or author might not get the full reward he/she deserves from the work.
This is why steemit developed zero tolerance for PLAGIARISM.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
Plagiarism is the act of representing someone else's work, ideas and thought as your own without proper credits to the owner.

So you won't be wrong to redefine Plagiarism as "the act of STEALING someone's work"

Plagiarism is not just limited to writing, it can also be in form of media; such as using someone's video clip or song without proper credits to the owner.

CAUSES OF PLAGIARISM
There are so many causes of plagiarism, but I will streamline the list to just '3 major causes of Plagiarism' as related to writing.

  1. EASY ACCESS TO CONTENTS
People plagiarise because it's very easy to copy and paste anything on the internet.
  2. LACK OF SKILLS OR CREATIVITY
Some people do not possess the necessary skills and creativity to come up with unique contents that's why they will prefer to use other persons work as their own.
  3. LANGUAGE BARRIER
Writing requires that you have a very solid understanding of the language in use. When one finds it difficult to write or express one's self effectively, plagiarism becomes an alternative.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

  1. Create your own contents:
Train yourself to write, make researches, study and understand the niche or topic you want to write. With time you will become a professional.
  2. If you are referencing from some where don't lift the words verbatim. Try to understand it before writing in your own words
  3. Use quotation marks to indicate that the writing is from another author and give proper attributes to the author.
  4. Use Plagiarism Checkers: There are lots of plagiarism detection tools (such as: Dupli Checker) you can use to check how much your content is Plagiarised.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, don't use people's work without acknowledging the owner of the content. Come up with your own ideas, be creative, acquire the necessary knowledge and understand the topic you want to write before diving into it.
