Achievement 2 @solhwa Task : Basic Security on Steem

in Newcomers' Community4 years ago

Hello friends, this is Solhwa.
Today’s post is related to my Achievement2 which is about how well we understand the level of security on Steemit.
This is actually a challenging post for me, I would say. Just thinking about how the minute we enter online world we become vulnerable even more than we are aware of makes me so worried. I have never thought of it as deeply as I should’ve in the first place, maybe because of the lack of information or understanding or maybe because I thought that life is just too simple and no one needs your gmail ID or password or whatever you keep online. I started taking online security more seriously after I found out that a while ago 4 of my email accounts were compromised due to the information leakage on the apps and websites I was a user of. Since that day, I am trying to control how I save my passwords and what kind of information I am posting online. We cannot be totally protected from the outer threats unless we take responsibility for our own security.
—————————————————————————————
Today I am learning about Steemit. When it comes to social media and people gathering on some sort of a platform to build a community - there always will be a threat. Because people who build strong communities are valuable. So we need an extra layer of security to protect our social identity and fairly earned money on this platform.

PART I
Understanding Security.
Let’s have a closer look on the security rules of Steemit.
Steemit provides you with one master password and 3 main keys.
Master password is for you to keep safely as this is the only one which helps you derive all your keys even your owner key. Your owner key is what can help you recover your account, change other keys including the owner key itself and it is your only way to get back your compromised account in case someone hacked it. Active key will is needed when you want to transfer funds, power up or down transactions, voting for witnesses, updating your profile or some other more sensitive tasks. And your everyday use posting key is what you have to use for daily posts, follows, comments or edits, votes and resteems and other limited actions.

How do I keep my passwords and keys safe?
I am currently using a password manager tool which has different ways to secure your accounts, but I prefer to set face auth., 2f auth, google otp and other extra layers of security on the top of the security provided by the app itself to store all my passwords and login history safely.

PART II
Understanding Steemit wallet and Power up.
Wallet...Important feature of Steemit platform which gives us so many benefits. I am still new so I am trying to understand the function and power of each item in the wallet.

  1. Steem
  2. Steem power
  3. SBD - Steem backed dollars

Steem is your liquid asset which you can easily transfer to another account, trade or power it up. Well, this is easy. It is like having cash with which you can buy your groceries everyday, the cash will come in and go.

Steem power - this is your asset which is locked up in your account and to move it you have to power it down (it takes 4 weeks apparently). Steem power considered to be more important as it increases your level of influence on steemit, it is a sort of long-term investment in Steemit Inc.

SBD - Steem backed dollars can be traded for Steem on the internal market or transferred to another user.

Now it comes the fun part, powering up!

Honestly speaking, until reading this post by @kiwiscanfly as a task to achievement2 I had no idea about what to do with all that different small balances I have in my wallet. Now I have better idea! And as you may see, I have a loooong way to go.... :D
I hope I will pass this test, please evaluate my Achievement2.
