Microbiomes in Human Health

in Project HOPE5 days ago

How the tangled communities of tiny microbes living in and on us, collectively known as microbiome, affects human health. These microorganisms, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, are much concentrated in the intestines where they play a role in digestion and absorption of nutrients and also strengthen the immune system.

A new discovery shows that the gut microbiome affects different aspects of health ranging from metabolic to psychological health. A healthy community of microorganisms which may reside in the body also contribute in averting diseases, decreasing levels of inflammation and synthesizing some critical vitamins. On the other hand, an imbalance which can be referred to as dysbiosis is associated with the likes of obesity, diabetes and depression.

By no means is the investigation of microbiomes limited to the gut. The microbiota of skin, oral, and respiratory cavities are also beneficial as they are part of our primary defenses against pathogenic microorganisms and modulators of immune responses. In the recent past, there has been development of different treatments through microbiome research; these are probiotics, and personalized medicine for the regulation of microorganisms in the body.

The recognition and support of our microbiomes can open up new opportunities for better health and new cures for diseases, proving the significance of these tiny life forms in the life of every individual.
