Will technology destroy books? - Personal opinion
Hello Project HOPE friends, best wishes to all. Today I want to share with you what I think could be an interesting topic for debate, especially considering that our world is increasingly digitalized, and things as important as books seem to be rather elements of the past most of the time, especially for the youngest
In the digital age in which we live, technology has transformed our lives in powerful ways. However, one of the questions that frequently arises is whether technology will destroy books, at least I wonder. It is evident that, with the great flow of information available today, it is increasingly less common to see young people reading a book. It seems to be a trend of the past, since mobile devices and social networks have captured the attention of new generations.
Nowadays, it is more likely to see a young person immersed in social networks than with a book in their hands, and I am not exaggerating. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter offer quick, easy-to-consume content designed to capture attention for short periods of time. Although these platforms can offer educational and valuable content, the reality is that much of the time young people consume content that does not provide them with much in terms of personal or intellectual development. Memes, viral videos, and internet challenges can be entertaining, but they rarely offer the same level of depth and reflection as a good book.
Reading books has historically been a way to acquire knowledge, expand the imagination, and improve cognitive skills such as concentration and reading comprehension. A book invites us to immerse ourselves in complex worlds, explore different perspectives and reflect on deep topics. Reading also encourages empathy, by allowing us to live other people's experiences through the eyes of the characters. How can a social network compete with this experience?, they simply cannot, but still, networks are winning the battle.
However, technology does not necessarily have to be an enemy of books. In fact, it can be an ally, and I think the approach should go more along these lines. E-book and audiobook platforms have made reading more accessible than ever. Now, you can carry an entire library on a portable device and read or listen anytime, anywhere. The key is to find a balance and promote the responsible use of technology, and this is where the most complex work is.
It is essential that both educators and parents promote reading among young people. This can be achieved by offering books that are relevant and engaging to them, integrating technology in positive ways such as using reading apps and educational platforms, and setting specific times to disconnect from social media and immerse themselves in a good book.
I know that in theory this sounds easy, and perhaps because I am not a parent I can speak so calmly and offer a possible solution, however, beyond this, what I do believe is that reading needs to be encouraged more, without neglect the technological, because undoubtedly this will not go down in history, at least not on the path we are going, don't you think?
