It is not the first time that we have talked in this blog about the scarcity of drinking water on our planet, despite the fact that it is made up of three quarters of water, as if we discount the salt water, frozen and buried in the subsoil, we only have one meager 0.7% of water suitable for human consumption.

Among pollution, hydraulic constructions and climatic effects, the situation of scarcity is increasing, which sooner or later can lead to serious armed conflicts for the control of this scarce resource, which is why any solution to this scarcity is always welcome.

Of all the possible options, the most logical seems to be the desalination of seawater, if only because of its abundance and accessibility, and in fact it is one of the most widely used ways to obtain drinking water, but both the evaporation method and the reverse osmosis method requires a large expenditure of energy.

Now a group of scientists from the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Tokyo have discovered a new method of desalination of water using nano-structures based on nano-fluorine channels that work faster, with less pressure and less energy.

Fluorine is a light element that is hydrophobic, which is the same as saying it repels water, and the researchers developed filtration membranes composed of nanoscopic fluorine rings that formed a lipid layer similar to cell walls, passed salt water through it and they observed the results.

To their amazement, the system not only worked but did it thousands of times faster than other conventional devices and around 2400 times faster than the most revolutionary and innovative carbon nanotube-based devices.
Hopefully it will soon be available to those who need it most.

There is so much shortage of water. My city is running out of water many areas get water for only 2-3 days a week

Hello @mauromar, Any advance that allows the desalination and purification of seawater is important and essential, and one of the details that I am thinking of at the moment that I have read your post is what volume of water can be treated per day? device meet the demand of a city or a small town?, all this considering the great problems in the water supply of some cities in Venezuela where salt water can be used.

Congratulations, your post has been upvoted by @dsc-r2cornell, which is the curating account for @R2cornell's Discord Community.

Hello @mauromar
This is a solution to a big problem in the world, because as you say, could that be a cause of wars in the future, I hope not.
Interestingly there being so much (salty) water in the seas it cannot be used unless it goes through a prior process, which would only make it become more expensive, but regardless of that, there would be water availability. It is needed.
Thanks for the information.
