Investing In Knowledge

in Project HOPE2 years ago

While growing up, there was this boy that was from a wealthy family within the neighbourhood. The father owned an iron smelting factory. Along the line, the father became very ill that he could not afford to go to the factory again. Then the son, who knew almost nothing about iron smelting who had not been coming close to study the business while his father worked, was asked to look after the business. In less than 6 months, he blew up the whole business. Now, one may asked "what happened?" Very simple; he lacked knowledge. This is part of the necessities of investing in knowledge.

The world is already getting more complex and highly competitive, and the fact that many aspects of human lives are evolving with speed makes the competition even more intense. If all you know today is what you knew yesterday, then you are not matching the rate at which the world is evolving and you may go into obsoletion if you do not update with your knowledge. Possessing a degree of knowledge create a value for you and makes you to be sought after. Even in your workplace for example; if they are meant to downsize their staffs or lay off some workers, they will definitely not ask their best hands to go, they will start with the employees that add little to no value in the organisation.

Knowledge is without recourse to your status or your degrees. At this point in time, many people are no longer concerned with what you have (in terms of degree) but what you know. There is no knowledge that you gather that will not be a plus to you. Even if it is not now, it might be sometime in the near future. Any opportunity you have to gain more knowledge should be taken because this is a pathway to building up yourself for what lies ahead.

More often than not, the better understanding of life you get and the more knowledge you acquire, the easier it becomes to solve the problems of life. This is why I believe that "the more you know about a particular thing and the more you build up yourself in knowledge, the more you can solve a problem related to that particular thing." You will agree with me that the knowledge you will require to pass an exam is not gotten inside the hall on the day of the exam but the knowledge you already have before the exam. A soldier is not trained on the day of the battle but ahead of the battle and prepared for the day of the battle. In the same way, in life, the knowledge you gain today may be the solution to the problem you may face tomorrow.

When you see someone that has invested in knowledge and someone who has not, the difference will be clear. There was a time I took a particular work to my friend to help me fix. In less than 10 minutes, it was done and to my amazement, I asked him how he was able to get it done in such a very short time. He smiled and calmly replied that he has spent years to study on how to get it done in minutes. This proves the power that is embedded in knowledge.

A lot of things that people are struggling to get done is because they lack the basic knowledge to get it done. When the knowledge is acquired, they will have ease of doing it. More so, the more knowledge you have, the more you are preferred over the others. I ask you; if you are to get something done and there is someone that can do it efficiently, even if you do not like the person, you will have no choice than to call him for the job. No wonder it has been said that "knowledge increases self-worth. This reminds me of this popularly used quote:

What you know is what makes you known.

Investing in knowledge is likened to investing into self development and it comes with added advantages both in the present and the future. Just like I normally say: "Seek to know and you will grow." Knowledge does not only come with power, it comes with growth.
