Revisiting The Past And Settling With It
One of the major problems of a lot of people is from their past. That is, they have some unsettled challenges in the past which have prevented them from moving on with life. The truth is that the past is not always passed, it can haunt you if not addressed. There are times that you need to revisit the past so as to settle one or two things that may prevent you from making advancements. You have to know that the effect of the past on the present is without question, but if you allow something to keep happening, it will continue that way. In order to stop something from happening, you need to go to the root of it to know why it is happening.
If you do not know the reason why something happened in the past; maybe something bad, you may keep seeing it happening again and again. It is true that what happened in the past has happened and cannot be changed, and it is also true that it is already having effect on the present, but a greater truth is that it can teach lessons in the present to position you on the right path. Some people are still holding on to the guilt of the past and it has prevented them from making progress. You need to go back and forgive yourself over the wrong that you did in the past so as to make a headway today.
There may be what has gone wrong in the past and allowing it may hamper the future, so you need to make it right with the past first. In order to settle with the past, there are things you need to understand. Firstly, you need to understand the past. Every single human alive has a past, some of which may not be too palatable. There is nothing to be too ashamed of your own to the point that you let it affect the present and the future. You have to understand that, even though the past cannot be changed, you still have the power to control the influence it will have on the future by your actions of the present.
The next point is to make peace with both the past and with yourself. This comes with forgiving yourself in order to find peace. If you keep living in self-guilt over what had happened in the past, you may not be able to access the glory that the future has to deliver. Sometimes, there is nothing resisting your motion in life other than how you have held on to the guilt of the past. Nothing creates a feeling of lack of self-worth more than the emotions attached to the guilt of the past. You have to let go of what is tying you down in the past in order to move on.
You have to understand that revisiting the past is not a call to begin to dwell in the past, but you need to find peace with it so that you can secure your future. There may be people you have wronged or some toes you have stepped on. Just a simple sorry or maybe restitution might be all it will take for you to make peace with the past and prevent it from haunting you in the future. You may be surprised that the people you may need in the future are the same people you had angered in the past as a result of your actions. But by making up with them, you would have secured the future and positioned yourself right with them.
One thing you also need to avoid is regret. Instead wrapping your head around the regrets of the past - maybe over what you should have done that you did not do, or what you did that you should not have done, it is better to look forward with hope. There are lots of things in the present that you can embrace, which will also take your mind off the regrets of the past. Your hopes of a better tomorrow should be stronger than the regrets of the past. Do not allow your past to define you but it should provide you with the lessons to help you to make the most of the present, so as to create a good tomorrow.
