Gaming Usage Up 75 Percent Amid Coronavirus Outbreak, Verizon Reports

  • According to Verizon’s analysis of their own fiber optic and wireless networks, US video game usage during peak hours went up 75% week over week since the quarantine went into effect last week and has led many to change their lifestyles.

  • By comparison, VPN usage (likely due to people working from home) was up by 34% while web traffic was up 20%in the peak hours and video demand was up 12%.

Analysis and Comments

  • Video gaming stocks are unsurprisingly continuing to outperform the market as they are clear beneficiaries of the stay at home trend.

  • In addition to the above, data from streaming platform Twitch, Steam, the leading PC online distribution platform, and feedback from most management teams all continue to highlight surge in volume and demand (also eSports is now the only sports on TV).

  • Headlines are that after weeks of testing, nearly all developers are now working from home and early signs are that productivity levels haven’t dropped (although of course it is very early days and risks of game delays remain); developers are using a system that accesses the power of their workstations directly from home computers.

  • Top Picks are Ubisoft and Electronic Arts (EA), although analysts view Activision Blizzard as an outperformer on the “stay at home” trade, with CD Projekt’s story the least affected by CoV (assuming there is no excessive outbreak in Poland).
