I've been thinking a lot about steem lately, so ...
naturally I came here to post my thoughts.
When I first found steem in 2017 I thought it was really weird that there were so many posts about steem. There aren't many people posting about Facebook on Facebook or about Medium on Medium, right? Anyways, with everything that's been happening the past couple of weeks all the about steem content is understandable.
The moment I heard about Tron buying steemit Inc (stInc!!!) my first thought was, 'Great, my feed will be flooded with posts about this'. And it was. So I've been pretty disengaged lately. I even went over to the dark side and read a few articles on Publish0x. It's way more boring over there - poorly written content and very little engagement between community members. The tipping rewards are pretty generous though! Back to steem - I loosely followed the back-and-forth of what was going on but didn't really know (or care) about the details. However, today whilst I was out running I was listening to Laura Shin's Unconfirmed podcast about the latest steem dramas. I find podcasts a much more efficient way of getting information than filtering through news feeds that have many, many posts about the same thing. This episode helped me get a much better understanding of what's been happening.
However, it left me feeling pretty negative about the future of steem. It looks like the Sun/Tron coup has cast doubts over the sustainability of Delegated-Proof-of-Stake. DPoS has kept steem ticking along these past few years just fine but one bad actor has shown how vulnerable it can be through the manipulation of exchanges. So that's my first concern.
My second concern is with the old steem is not steemit mantra. Most people reading this will understand the difference between the two. My go-to steem UI/dApp is steempeak. I switched over to steempeak late last year after Partiko shut up shop without any explanation (rude!). I was happy to do this because BAT payments had just rolled out on the iOS version of the Brave browser - so instead of using a native app (Partiko) I used a web app in Brave browser and started stacking BAT along with STEEM. My experience so far with steempeak has been great! However, just recently I've noticed a few steemit dependencies (this is not a criticism of steempeak per se, I'm sure most other steem dApps have the same steemit dependencies) -
- there are several hard-coded links to steemitwallet.com.
- when you login it's via steemconnect - pretty sure this is a stInc service.
- I also revoked access for 3speak today as I found out they were the ones that had enforced an auto-claim rewards 'feature' (bit of a coincidence that this occurred the same time all this other stuff is happening?!!). When I was looking at revoking access for 3speak I also thought about what other dApps to revoke - you can't revoke steemit (at least I couldn't see there was a way).
steem is not steemit - but these dependencies are a concern for me now that Sun is running stInc and we've seen what he's capable of.
Thanks for reading. Lately I've been experimenting with posting using different dApps/tribes. This is my first post posting directly through Neoxian City.

It's all a bit crazy here at the moment that's for sure.

You are right, Steemit is still needed apparently.
