Album Artwork Contest & Results: TWO WINNERS - WIN STEEM-BASED PRIZES - My Mind is on Music

in My Mind is on Music3 days ago (edited)

Last week, we started the 'Album Artwork Contest' here in 'My Mind is on Music." The first album cover we used was Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon,' and we had two qualifying entries. Since this was the first time running the contest, each participant will receive the first-place prize of 10 @steembasicincome credits! You'll find those two posts below.

This contest is pretty self-explanatory; we'll post artwork from a musician's album, and your task will be to tell us what you see. This week's album cover is "Fragile" from the group Yes. "Fragile" (the band's fourth album) was released in August of 1971, was 40:28 long, and featured 10 songs. Remember, there are no wrong answers, only your interpretation of the artwork. I'll post a snippet via ChatGPT in the comments in case anyone is interested in more information about the cover itself in terms of what the band thought.

The album cover is below: (Via X)

Make sure to look over the rules below before making your submission!

How It Works

  • A single album cover image will be provided in the announcement post.
  • Your task is to analyze or imagine the story behind the artwork—focus on the colors, characters, background elements, or any hidden symbolism you notice.

Submission Guidelines

  • Word Count: Aim for 200–300 words.
  • Format: Publish your entry in the 'My Mind is on Music' community on Steemit with the hashtag #albumart among the first four tags in the post.
  • Content: You can take a fictional angle (invent a narrative) or a more critical approach (offer an interpretation). Either is fine, as long as it’s your own work.
  • Deadline: Entries must be submitted before the 31th of December. Late entries won’t be considered.

Judging Criteria

  • Originality (40%): Does your interpretation bring a fresh angle or creative twist?
  • Clarity and Flow (40%): Is your write-up organized, engaging, and coherent?
  • Connection to the Artwork (20%): How well do you tie your thoughts to specific visual elements on the cover (e.g., symbols, colors, shapes)?

Prizes

How to Submit

  • Create Your Post: Write your interpretation, making sure it meets the 200–300 word guideline.
  • Use the Required Tag: Add the unique contest tag #albumart so we can find your entry easily.
  • Share the Link: Comment on the official announcement post with a link to your submission.

Important Notes

  • This is a family-friendly community, so please keep content suitable for all readers.
  • Plagiarism is not allowed; any suspected copied work will be disqualified.
  • You do not need to research or listen to the actual album—this contest focuses solely on the art itself.

GOOD LUCK!

From ChatGPT on the history/band's thoughts on the album cover:

While Roger Dean’s cover art for Yes’s Fragile (1971) invites plenty of personal interpretations, there are a few points the artist and band members have shared over the years that shed light on its general meaning:

A Delicate Planet

Roger Dean has mentioned that the small, floating world represents the Earth—beautiful yet breakable. The visible cracks emphasize its fragile nature, a statement that can be read as environmental commentary or a broader metaphor for how easily what we love can fall apart.

Visual Companion to the Music

Yes was entering a more exploratory phase musically, and the artwork echoes that spirit of expansion. The sense of a “world adrift” aligns with the band’s interest in grand, sometimes otherworldly soundscapes.

Continuity in Dean’s Artwork

In subsequent Yes albums, Dean continued depicting floating islands and surreal landscapes. Fragile is one chapter in a larger visual saga linking themes of travel, cosmic adventure, and humanity’s relationship to nature.

Band Dynamics

While not a direct statement about internal band issues, some fans read “Fragile” as reflecting group changes and growth at the time. The cover’s sense of a planet on the verge of breaking could be seen as a nod to how bands—and even the world around them—can be unstable and vulnerable.

Bottom Line

There’s no single “official” story that spells out every detail of the Fragile artwork. Rather, Dean’s commentary highlights environmental awareness, the precarious beauty of new frontiers, and a desire to match Yes’s expansive music with a similarly boundary-pushing visual. Everything else—mythic lands, interstellar voyages, ecological warnings—remains open for listeners (and onlookers) to explore in their own imaginations.
