The picture I have presented today in One Picture One Story is a traditional art of our country and the Indian subcontinent. This art is called Nakshi Kantha. The history of Nakshi Kantha is very ancient. It is said that this art has been prevalent in this country since before the seventeenth century. This Nakshi Kantha is mentioned in our traditional folklore. In addition, our village poet Jasimuddin played an important role in popularizing Nakshi Kantha. He also wrote a book on Nakshi Kantha called Nakshi Kantha maath.
Nakshi Kantha is an art created primarily by women. Women used to use their talents to create beautiful designs on sarees and lungis in their free time with the help of needles and threads. At one time, it was so popular that stories from the Hindu epic Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and historical stories of Muslims were also depicted through this Nakshi Kantha. In addition, various flowers, birds, and various animals, including various natural scenes, were depicted.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this extraordinary art gradually declined due to the improvement and ease of availability of stone-built textiles.
Nakshi Kantha, which was once a symbol of taste, is no longer found. Even when it is found again, its price is beyond reach.
The Nakshi Kantha designs that used to adorn the walls of almost every person's handkerchief, scarf, saree, cushion cover, and the walls of the house to enhance the beauty of the house are no longer found.
A few days ago, I went to visit the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Museum located in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. There, I saw the exotic Nakshi Kantha designs. This beautifully designed Nakshi Kantha was once easily available to us, but today, traditional Nakshi Kantha adorns the walls of the museum. I am mesmerized and keep looking at the Nakshi Kantha hanging on the walls around me. And I remember the ancient tradition.
This Nakshi Kantha is a symbol of our heritage. This Nakshi Kantha reminds us of our ancient artwork. This Nakshi Kantha reminds us of the outstanding artistry of the women of our country. Today, I present to you the Nakshi Kantha, the bearer of that tradition. I hope that you too will develop a sense of respect for the women of our past by seeing such wonderful artwork. I am leaving today with that hope.
