SEC - S5W6 | My Favorite Game - Cricket

in Scouts y sus Amigos2 years ago (edited)

'' Cricket! Cricket! Cricket! Don't you have any other work to do?'' That was my mother during my childhood.

Cricket is the only obsession I have had until now. Playing or watching, it doesn't matter to me. So, when I saw this contest, I knew exactly what to write about! Kudos to the Scouts and their Friends community for organizing this for the last week of engagement challenge to bring up the sports enthusiasm of steemians!

My Favorite Game

So, as I said its Cricket! It's a widely popular game around the world, with around 2.5 billion fans overall. But I guess most of you are not familiar with this beautiful game, as it's mostly played in a few countries.

The governing body is International Cricket Council - ICC. As per its records, now there are 12 full members and 96 associate members. So, it's gradually widening the territory!

The history of Cricket goes way back to the mid-16th century in South East England and it expanded with the British Empire. And according to the records, the first international match has been played in 1844.

Method of playing and Rules

Cricket is a bat and ball game between 2 teams. Batting, Fielding, and bowling are the three basic skills of Cricket, just like Baseball. But Cricket is played on a field, which has a 20m pitch at the center. There are 2 wickets at both ends. The team who wins the toss can decide whether bat or field first. So, fielding side balls and 2 batsmen from the batting side can score runs at once.

The batting team tries to score runs inside their overs, while bowlers try to get their wickets. There are 2 on-field umpires, a Tv umpire, and a match referee to control the scenes.

  • No. of players per team - Internationally there are 11 members playing per team + 4 reserve players (most common). But there are 6-side matches too. But in general, you can play with any number.

  • Format - ODI (50 overs per team, normally 7 hours), T20I (20 Overs per team, normally 3.5 hours), Test (consecutive 5 days, 2 innings per each team, 90 overs per day). Here over consist 6 fair deliveries. But in general, we can play with many

  • Equipment - Ball, bat, Wicket (Stumps, Bail), Protective equipment for batsman (gloves, pad, helmet, thigh guard, arm guards, chest guard, elbow guards, ball guard). This equipment is used in hardball cricket, in Soft ball we can play without them.

  • Playing Area - It's usually a circular/ oval shape with around 150m in diameter. The end zone around is called boundaries. At the center, there is a 20mx3m pitch where batsman play.

  • Ways to score runs - By running between the wicket (1runs, 2 runs, 3 runs, 4 runs), boundaries (by managing the ball to cross the boundary line - 4 & 6), extras (no ball, wide)

  • Ways of getting out - Being bowled, caught, Leg Before Wicket, Stumped, run-out, hit wicket, obstructing the field, and timed-out, Hitting the ball twice, timed-out

Well, these are basic rules and instructions for playing cricket. I guess it's enough to play a good game though. Anyway, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London is the rule maker of Cricket.

Now the craze for Cricket has been very high. Recently, the T20 Cricket world cup ended in Australia, with England being the champions. The excitement level was top-notch.

My acheivements

Well, I used to play cricket a lot in my childhood. Softball cricket is the general one, as it doesn't need much equipment. We played whenever there is free time in school, then after school. In 2009 we started a hardball cricket team in school. We started from nothing and slowly build up the team. I played for under-15 and under-17 school teams. In 2010 we could the semi-finals in Division 3 school cricket for the first time.

In 2012, bet you can't find me!

In 2012 we got the chance to play an invitation match in India. We receive a 7-day tour in Chennai. It was the best moment in my life. But I couldn't continue playing hardball after my O/L s. Now just friendly softball matches are playing.

Final Words

Well, Cricket is just like part of my life. Even though I enjoy watching and playing Football, carrom, Volleyball, Athletics, Rugby, Basketball, and many outdoor games (not a fan of mobile/ computer games), Cricket gives me next-level goosebumps. I guess it's because Sri Lanka has a world-class cricket team and won a number of major tournaments.

Long hail this beautiful game!!

So, that's it. Hope you will enjoy it. Thank you for the opportunity. I invite @senehasa, @msharif, and @rex-sumon to the contest!

Until the next time! Enjoy!

Thank you.
Best Regards!

Hello @damithudaya, I appreciate your inviting me to play cricket. I know you as a cricket buddy, and anyone who reads your entry can tell how knowledgeable you are about the game. Don't you play cricket at the University? Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Thank you! No... After O/L s I didn't play hard ball cricket.. Now I am just a spectator!!

We gain much fun by watching cricket series. What is your idea about Arjuna Ranathunga's decision regarding cricket.

I respect him! But now it's not his era. The boys are doing a great job recently, we have finally come to the correct track, and team combination. So, we should give this young team a chance to grow. There are still things to improve, and some concerns about fitness as well. Losing is part of the game. Even Austrlia couldn't select for semis even in their home condition. So, he should be back off now, keeping respect without always criticising the team

Extremely correct. He should stop the criticizing, the team excellent now.

Thank you, friend!
