Technology is what runs the world of today. Imagining a life without it will lretty much have me looking at life during the ice age: life would be almost too hard on us. This is the farthest I’ve gone thinking about life without IT, until now. This is the first I will be writing out how I see life without IT. Life without IT will affect different things. I’ll take them one after the other.

Communication

In the world we live in today, communication is the hallmark of everything dear and important to us. We use IT gadgets like mobile phones and technology like the internet for this purpose. We especially get in touch with our friends and family over phone calls: including video calls. We conduct interviews for job applicants virtually.

Without the internet and gadgets like mobile phones for communication, we would need to turn back and polish our letter writing skills as this would be our only communication method. It would take at least days for a letter that simply says you’ll not be able to come home for Christmas to reach your family, by which time Christmas probably will be over.

Agriculture

IT has greatly improved agriculture in ways too advanced for our great grand fathers. IT machines like Tractors having multi- functional capabilities replace and properly perform work that it normally eill take men and animals several days to achieve.

With a Tractor for example, farms can be ploughed, maize can be dehusked, farm produce can be collected and transported home.

A life without machines like this will mean lower work efficiency and lower yield in agriculture as a result. Many more people and a long period of time is going to be spent working on the farmland to perform jobs that IT could easily handle.

Education

In a matter of seconds, I can access whatever information I need online. This is because of existence of the internet. What would education look like without this?

Well we would have to resort back to the text-book version of learning. There would be nothing like online learning where you could take courses and exams online virtually like we did during the Covid Pandemic. What if I am not around but need to take an exam? What if I needed a piece of information but didn’t have a text book about it? Education will experience a major pullback without IT.

Electricity

Why didn’t this come first? This is the driving force of almost everything mentioned so far, electricity is what powers our machines and our houses. Without it, we’re going to have to go back to using the moon for light at night, and we will not be able to use all our electricity-powered gadgets including our Fridges, Fans, Some Automobiles, phones and computers.

Health

Talking about IT, we can’t forget about how greatly out health sector has been improved by it. Our ability to use technology to invent smart gadgets like thermometers, ultrasounds and electrosurgical units, have saved thousands of lives. A life without these will see mortality rate would be hitting the roofs.

A life without IT will be miserable as miserable as life gets, but still livable despite the hardship. This will be a life without all the fancy and important machines and piece of tech in daily use. A life where the only way to cross a continent will be using a wood boat over the sea.
