There is some debate about the precise title of "first rugby club" depending on how you define it. However, two strong contenders exist:

  • Guy's Hospital Football Club: Founded in 1843 in London, this club is recognized by both the Rugby Football Union and Guinness World Records as the oldest rugby club in the world. They played football using a modified form of the Rugby School code, which eventually evolved into modern rugby.
  • Dublin University Football Club: Established in 1854, this club lays claim to being the world's oldest surviving football club in any code, including rugby. While not technically formed before Guy's Hospital, they have had a continuous existence and played a significant role in the development of rugby's rules and dissemination throughout the world.

So, depending on your definition, either Guy's Hospital Football Club or Dublin University Football Club could be considered the "first rugby club." Both hold important historical significance in the development and spread of this beloved sport.
