Kos City Eng/Deu

Hello dear community,
Now we had arrived on Kos for our relaxing holiday. But of course we couldn't help it and incorporated excursions into our stay. It's certainly nice to just lie by the pool for 10 days, but we're just too active for that and want to see something of the world.

On the second day of our stay we headed towards the bus stop in front of the hotel and took the cheap bus for about 30 minutes to Kos town. The weather was wonderful and we were looking forward to exploring the city. Directly near our bus stop there was a beautiful Greek Orthodox church that we took a look at directly. And we were not disappointed. Fantastically opulent inside with great ceiling paintings and golden chandeliers. It was very impressive.

We continued through flower-lined streets, past centuries-old houses towards the old town and pedestrian zone. Here small traditional restaurants alternated with shops. Here and there a local sat in the cafe and relaxed and drank his morning coffee. After some shopping in the small shops, we bought some olive oil, spices and ouzo as souvenirs for those staying at home, we also looked for a small restaurant and I enjoyed the local beer "Mythos". Very tasty and refreshing. And all this to the chirping of the hundreds of cicadas that were sitting in the trees all around.

From here we went to the harbor and admired the huge luxury yachts that were anchored here. And of course we also wanted to visit the fortress complex right next to the harbor. On the way there we passed one of the big attractions of Kos town. Hippocrates' plane tree. The famous doctor Hippocrates is said to have taught his students under the oriental plane tree, but the exact age of the tree can no longer be determined due to fungal and insect infestation as it is hollow. According to another legend, the Apostle Paul is said to have spread Christian teachings in this same place. Right next to the "Plane Tree of Hippocrates", an ancient sarcophagus was converted into a fountain, which was created under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century and features Arabic engravings.

The fortress we then entered was the Johanniter fortress "Neratzia", which already protected the city's harbor in ancient times. Today a slightly dilapidated ruin that is very spacious and offers a great view of the harbor and the Turkish coast on the other side of the sea.

On the way back to the bus we passed a small alley that seems to be entirely geared towards Dutch tourists and is probably the party area of the city. Here pubs were lined up close together and everything was orange. We found a beer pong club funny, where there were countless beer pong tables lined up in front of the club. All hell is probably breaking loose here in the evenings and there is gambling at every table.

So we spent a nice half day in Kos town and again explored a city that we didn't know before.

Hallo liebe Community,
nun waren wir also angekommen auf Kos zu unserem Relax Urlaub. Aber natürlich konnten wir es nicht lassen und haben auch Ausflüge in unseren Aufenthalt eingebaut. 10 Tage nur am Pool zu liegen ist zwar sicher schön aber dazu sind wir einfach zu aktiv und wollen etwas von der Welt sehen.

Am zweiten Tag unseres Aufenthaltes machten wir uns also auf in Richtung Bushaltestelle vor dem Hotel und fuhren günstig mit dem bus ca. 30 Minuten nach Kos Stadt. Das Wetter war herrlich und wir freuten uns auf eine Stadterkundung. Unmittelbar in der Nähe unserer Bushaltestelle befand sich auch gleich eine wunderschöne griechisch orthodoxe Kirche die wir direkt in Augenschein nahmen. Und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Im Inneren fantastisch prunkvoll mit tollen Deckengemälden und goldenen Kronleuchtern. Es war sehr beeindruckend.

Weiter ging es durch blumengesäumte Straßen, vorbei an Jahrhunderte alten Häusern in Richtung Altstadt und Fußgängerzone. Hier wechselten sich dann kleine traditionelle Restaurants mit Geschäften ab. Hier und da saß ein Einheimischer im Cafe und trank entspannt seine morgendlichen Kaffee. Nach etwas Shopping in den kleinen Läden, wir kauften etwas Olivenöl, Gewürze und Ouzo als Mitbringsel für die Daheimgebliebenen, suchten auch wir uns ein kleines restaurant und ich genoß das einheimische Bier "Mythos". Sehr lecker und erfrischend. Und das zum Zirpen der hunderte Zikaden, die in den Bäumen ringsum saßen.

Von hier gingen wir zum Hafen und bewunderten die riesigen Luxusyachten, die hier vor Anker lagen. Und natürlich wollten wir auch die Festungsanlage direkt neben dem Hafen besichtigen. Auf dem Weg dahin kamen wir an einer der großen Attraktionen von Kos Stadt vorbei. Der Platane des Hippokrates. Unter der Orientalischen Platane soll schon der berühmte Arzt Hippokrates seine Schüler unterwiesen haben, das genaue Alter des Baumes ist jedoch aufgrund von Pilz- und Insektenbefall nicht mehr bestimmbar, da er hohl ist. Einer weiteren Sage nach soll der Apostel Paulus an eben jenem Ort auch die christlichen Lehren verbreitet haben. Direkt neben der "Platane des Hippokrates" wurde ein antiker Sarkophag zu einem Brunnen umgebaut, der unter der Herrschaft des osmanischen Reiches im 18. Jahrhundert entstand und arabische Gravierungen aufweist.

Bei der Festungsanlage in die wir dann eintraten handelte es sich um die Johanniterfestung "Neratzia", die schon in alten Zeiten den Hafen der Stadt schützte. Heute eine leicht verfallene Ruine, die sehr weitläufig ist und einen tollen Blick auf den Hafen und die türkische Küste auf der anderen Meerseite bietet.

Auf dem Weg zurück zum Bus kamen wir dann noch an einer kleinen Gasse vorbei, die scheinbar gänzlich auf holländische Touristen eingerichtet ist und vermutlich den Partybereich der Stadt darstellt. Hier waren Pubs dicht an dicht gereiht und alles in der Farbe orange. Lustig fanden wir einen Bier-Pong Club, bei dem vor dem Club unzählige Bier-Pong Tische aufgereiht standen. Hier ist vermutlich abends die Hölle los und an jedem Tisch wird gespielt.

So verbrachten wir also einen schönen halben Tag in Kos Stadt und haben wieder eine Stadt erkundet, die wir vorher nicht kannten.
