A 600 year old olive tree as a symbol of peace

Hey guys, today I'm going to tell you about a very old olive tree in the placa de cort.

The tree is almost the biggest attraction of the place and a very popular photo motive.

It is very thick and especially curvy. The olive tree on Palma's town hall square in the middle of the city centre is probably the most famous tree on Mallorca. The Majorcan people call it "Olivera de Cort". Its age is estimated at about 500 to 600 years. Grown in Pollença and replanted in Palma in 1989, the tree is now six metres high and its trunk seven metres thick. Since there are olive trees that live to be over 1000 years old, it is probably not too late for all of us to visit it once or twice ;)

Let's go to Plaza Cort:

The town hall square "Placa Cort" represents one of the seven landmarks (the cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, Castell de Bellver, Gran Hotel, La Lonya and Banys arabs) of Mallorca. The fact that the tree grows in the town hall square is thanks to the donation of the Mallorcan hotelier and bus company Jaime Batle. In 1989 he organised the move of the tree, which originally grew on a finca near Pollença. Olive trees can be replanted even when they are very old. The aim of the initiative at the time was to give the town hall square a green that was as symbolic as it was typical of the island.

Now the tree is protected from intrusive admirers by a grid, but of course photography is allowed.

In the square there is also the Palma de Mallorca Town Hall, it is a monument. You can see it on the last picture.

The façade of the building is from the 17th century and the interior decoration from the 19th century. It is located in the Plaça de Cort, in the absolute centre of Palma. The building was once a court and the executive power of the Kingdom of Mallorca. With the administrative changes of the 18th century, the Palma Town Hall inherited the building.

The name of the square 'Cort' recalls the feudal court assemblies that once took place here.

The boutique hotels Hotel Cort and Hotel Mamá are also located here. Their high-quality restaurants offer seating on the terrace, where you can sit back and relax and soak up the atmosphere of the square. Calle Colón, lined with shops, connects Plaza Cort with Plaza Mayor, while Calle del Palacio Reial on the opposite side leads to the Almudaina Palace and La Seu Cathedral.
