DiGinnasio: What do you think of video games?/Cosa ne pensi dei videogiochi? (ENG/ITA)
I remember when I was a kid, my brothers, cousins, and I would eagerly look forward to family gatherings because that was the only time we could play the Nintendo playstation my uncle bought. Those were the good old days; having the console made every occasion extra fun for us kids. It was a lot of fun—the kind of joy you don’t get when playing alone.
We also lose ourselves in games like Bomberman, Tanks, Ice Climber, and Contra. Playing Ice Climber was especially hilarious because we didn’t focus on completing the mission—instead, we’d push each other off the platforms just for fun. They may be ‘old’ games, but they were true classics! The feelings they evoke are incomparable to the games we have today.
As we grew older, we moved on to newer games—perhaps fancier than Ice Climber, with much better graphics. We got hooked on fighting games, and my favorite was Mortal Kombat. I loved watching my character perform fatality moves and would diligently memorize the button sequences to pull them off!
A bit later, we became obsessed with Tekken 2. These games still required two players sitting side by side, so we were never alone—we always had fun together. Sure, we sometimes got so invested in the game that we’d argue, but it was never serious. We’d fight during the game, but once it was over, so was the fight.
Today, with everything available on the internet, we’re bombarded with countless video games, making it feel like it takes forever to choose one. MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) and story-driven games dominate the market. These are the games that kids and adults play these days. They’re fun and very convenient—you can play anytime, anywhere, and you don’t even have to wait for your friends. With just one click, the real world fades away, and you can immerse yourself in another world of fun and adventure.
We all love it, right? The convenience of having fun whenever you want, and most importantly, the way it takes away the stress and boredom we’re eager to escape, even if just for a moment. Who wouldn’t want to be in the game world?
Obviously, it’s an escape from reality—that’s really all there is to it. And not a bad one, actually. I do various things to escape reality for a little while, and video games happen to be one of them.
I once had a girlfriend who’s a hardcore gamer—a true nerd. She used to tell me that video games, like liquor or drugs, can be a form of escape, but as always, too much of anything can ruin not just yourself but also those around you. She even broke down different game types:
Multiplayer competitive games create an equal playing field where people can be mean to each other, regardless of their life status;
Multiplayer PvE games let you bond with others as you tackle the game’s missions or challenges together;
Single-player sandbox games allow you to unleash your creativity and experiment with different ideas;
and Single-player story-driven games let you immerse yourself in compelling narratives.
She also mentioned how games are one of the easiest ways to hang out with friends—and she was absolutely right. I wasn’t as hardcore as she was, and I was definitely not a fan of MMORPGs. She was mature enough not to force me into her world, but at some point, I decided to give it a try. I could see how much she really wanted me to, even without saying a word—so I did.
Before I knew it, I got hooked. Worse, I could no longer focus on anything else; I was constantly thinking about how to obtain more gatcha tickets to get high-class weapons and armor. After a while, the daily grind started feeling exhausting, draining so much time and effort.
Long story short, it was fun—I got hooked, I got obsessed, and even after I found some balance, I eventually grew tired of it all. In the end, it wasn’t adding anything meaningful to my life. There were no lasting values to take away from playing. It was exactly what it was—a game. Romanticizing it makes no difference.
Now, which would I prefer: video games of the past or modern ones? I’d choose the former. Those games usually required two players, meaning you had to invite your friends over, grab the controllers, and interact in person—that’s where the real fun started. It’s far better than being cooped up in your room alone, shouting obscenities at the wall.
Video games are definitely fun, I can tell you that much, when used for their intended purpose. But if you let them become the center of your life and lose balance—just like in a game—eventually, it’s game over for real.

I giochi competitivi multigiocatore creano un campo di gioco alla pari in cui le persone possono essere cattive l'una con l'altra, indipendentemente dal loro stato di vita;
I giochi PvE multigiocatore ti consentono di legare con gli altri mentre affronti insieme le missioni o le sfide del gioco;
I giochi sandbox per giocatore singolo ti permettono di scatenare la tua creatività e sperimentare idee diverse;
Prima che me ne rendessi conto, ero dipendente.
Sceglierei i primi.
If you ask me: there is only one computer game that has a raison d'être for me (but we'll get to that later ;-))
When I was younger, the games that were slowly coming into fashion were called: Pacman and Wormi. There was something with pipelines through which liquid flowed. Stuff I had zero interest in. A bit later, I watched Sonic. You know, the hedgehog. Not for me. Super Mario - what a load of rubbish. And with that I was out. Today's video games are much more complex and realistic, but they're just games on a screen. I can't do anything with this kind of action (it's not interaction). But I don't watch TV either, so maybe there's a similar argument to be made...
What I find cool and still play occasionally (and play well ;-)) - TETRIS. And I'm convinced that this training helps me to load my car in an extremely space-saving way ;-))

I never played Sonic and didn’t care much about it. Super Mario... I have to agree with you! 😄
Maybe modern video games focus on less interaction. Sometimes you just want to have fun without feeling pressured to engage with others.
Tetris stood the test of time, and you even found it handy somehow😄 You know what stood the test of time for me? At least in my case, it’s 4 Pics 1 Word. I guess it’s the way it forces me to think outside the box. I wish we had a game like this here...

Hehe - we have Scrabble and Wordle and we've also had chess... So if you have an idea of how we can realise such a round here, feel free to open a contest ;-)) I am happy to sponsor the prizes....
Wait a second, we have Scrabble here? And chess? How was that possible...
Oh... thank you, Heike. I might take you up on that, but there’s just one problem—I won’t be able to play it myself. I want to play too, you know! 🥲

I see the problem... ;-)) We will think about.
You found Wordle last time in Deutsch Unplugged. There is the place where Chriddi invented first online version of Scrabble. I don't now when the next edition will start, but... Soon ;-))
Chess - there was a special Community for and a few engaged chess player. I will try to find out more...
Right? You get all the fun while I miss out... Sorry, I know I’m being a bit childish on this😅 well...you know. I'll be happy to do it but let's brainstorm for the meantime...
I did come across a post from someone I'm not sure if it was chriddi... It was like a crossword puzzle or something but I don't know if it pushed through 'cause he was like asking everyone's opinion if they want a game like that...
I'm not that good at chess but it would've been fun if played here...

This is so cool...even though it's in german...
I have an older brother who is two years older than me. When we got a console during our school years, he believed that the rights to this console belonged to him as the elder. This often led to fights between us. If I managed to launch a couple of successful attacks, I would have to quickly run away because he was much bigger than me at the time (and he is still bigger than me now).
Also, he would often hide the power supply of the console so that I couldn't play when he wasn't around. But sometimes he would still allow me to play in his presence. During those times, he would constantly remind me not to press the joystick buttons too hard so as not to break it. And yes, I enjoyed playing🙂

That sounds traumatic...🥲 I’m sorry you had to experience a dictatorship at such a young age...
At least you got to enjoy it... under his terms, of course! 😄
To become a diamond, a certain pressure is needed. I believe that challenges make us stronger. By the way, I don't even consider those moments related to the console to be traumatic for me, as at that time much more unpleasant events were taking place.
You’re ahead of the game, and it’s great to hear that 🙂
Nobody is ahead. I believe we are all together😉
I heartily disagree. You're way ahead, bro😅
Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
Thank you, italygame!
