La Calceolaria integrifolia, conosciuta anche come calceolaria a foglia intera, è una pianta appartenente alla famiglia delle Calceolariaceae, originaria delle zone montuose del Sud America, in particolare delle Ande cilene e argentine. Apprezzata sia per la sua bellezza ornamentale che per la sua resistenza, questa pianta è spesso coltivata in giardini e terrazzi per la sua abbondante fioritura e il suo aspetto caratteristico.

La Calceolaria integrifolia è una pianta perenne che può raggiungere un'altezza di circa 50 cm a 1 metro, a seconda delle condizioni di crescita. Il suo portamento è cespuglioso, con fusti sottili e leggermente ramificati. Le foglie sono di forma ovale o lanceolata, di un verde scuro, e come suggerisce il nome, hanno i bordi interi, senza seghettature evidenti.

Il vero spettacolo offerto dalla Calceolaria integrifolia sono i suoi fiori, che sbocciano in estate e proseguono fino all’inizio dell’autunno. I fiori sono riuniti in infiorescenze terminali e hanno una forma estremamente particolare: sono infatti gonfi e arrotondati, ricordando piccole tasche o borse, da cui il nome comune "scarpetta della Madonna". I colori dei fiori variano dal giallo brillante all’arancione, talvolta con macchie rossastre o arancioni più scure.

La Calceolaria integrifolia predilige posizioni soleggiate o parzialmente ombreggiate, e cresce bene in terreni ricchi di sostanza organica e ben drenati. Nonostante la sua delicatezza apparente, è una pianta robusta, che tollera bene sia il caldo che brevi periodi di siccità. Tuttavia, una buona irrigazione durante i periodi caldi favorisce una fioritura più abbondante e prolungata.

Valued for both its ornamental beauty and its resilience, this plant is often grown in gardens and terraces for its abundant blooms and distinctive appearance.

Calceolaria integrifolia is a perennial plant that can reach a height of 50 cm to 1 meter, depending on growing conditions. It has a bushy habit, with thin, slightly branched stems. The leaves are oval or lance-shaped, with a dark green hue, and as the name suggests, they have smooth edges without noticeable serrations.

The real spectacle of Calceolaria integrifolia lies in its flowers, which bloom in summer and last until early autumn. The flowers are grouped in terminal inflorescences and have a very distinctive shape: they are swollen and rounded, resembling small pockets or pouches, hence the common name “pocketbook plant.” The colors of the flowers range from bright yellow to orange, sometimes with reddish or darker orange spots.

Calceolaria integrifolia prefers sunny or partially shaded spots and thrives in well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a hardy plant, tolerating both heat and short periods of drought. However, regular watering during hot periods encourages a more abundant and prolonged bloom.
