The sanctuary - El santuario

The main subject of this small watercolour represents one of the picturesque sanctuaries that dot the Spanish geography. They are places of worship associated with the different Marian invocations with which they are venerated, as blessed patroness, in the different towns and villages. In May, the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary, these places become epicentres of celebrations. The locals decorate the entire place with great care: gardens, courtyards, and façades are filled with bouquets and flowerpots brimming with flowers, and also with the traditional May crosses, further enhancing the surroundings.

This landscape anticipates the 'romería', a festival that will fill the sanctuary with life, when pilgrims and devotees come to pay homage and celebrate their patroness.

El motivo central de esta pequeña acuarela representa uno de los pintorescos santuarios que salpican la geografía española. Son lugares de culto asociados a las distintas advocaciones marianas con las que son veneradas, como patronas, en los distintos pueblos y aldeas. En mayo, el mes dedicado a la Virgen, estos lugares se convierten en epicentros de las celebraciones. Los lugareños decoran todo el sitio con esmero: jardines, patios y fachadas se llenan de ramos y macetas rebosantes de flores que embellecen aún más el entorno, y también de las tradicionales cruces de mayo.
Este paisaje anticipa la romería, festival que llenará de vida el santuario, cuando peregrinos y romeros acudan a rendir homenaje y festejar a su patrona.
