New Toys and Supplies!

Nothing is more fun than getting some new gardening toys! Sigh... when did I get so old... I used to relish the days of getting new electronic shinies, now... I'm excited by new hand tools! Well, in this case... it is an electronic garden tool at least!

After cutting back the long grass and weeds with the whipper-snipper... my wife had a go at trying to mow the shortened lawn with the hand-pushed lawnmower. And we quickly came to the conclusion that it just wasn't going to work! So... I was finally authorised to go out and buy a powered lawn mower. Now, the choice was going to be between an electric or petrol mower... I'm not particularly keen on the idea of storing petrol around, so I was always going to be more keen on the electric option. Interestingly enough, it is probably just as dangerous to have that many lithium-ion batteries loitering around the house as well!

Anyway... after doing some diligent research, I ended up purchasing a slightly more powerful and expensive version of the Ryobi electric lawnmower.... the reviews said that the weaker one would struggle too often in longer and thicker grass and that it would just prove too frustrating. Granted, our grass isn't crazily thick and heavy.... but it is in some spots, and it would be just better not to have to do a return just because I wanted to save a couple of hundred dollars.

So... the more powerful/expensive one it was.

It did take me some time to set it up... rain... and procrastination. But when I did... I did manage to easily get through the thick grass at the back. Then the girls came home from school, and they wanted to help. So, the older one took to the lawnmower (it has a drive assist, so you aren't pushing the entire weight...) and cut a section of grass quite nicely, whilst the little one just took it for little drives instead (I wasn't that keen to have her also have the bluades running). Then the older one wanted to go around the edges with the whipper-snipper... and she did a pretty decent job there as well!

Wow... looks like I will have it easy with the backyard chores if they both stay interested! I'm pretty sure that they won't, and this was just the allure of new toys!

Meanwhile... a batch of other little things as well. A couple of watering cans, and a moving trolley. The trolley isn't for the garden, but actually for moving harpsichords and fortepianos! The distilled water is for later use to mix with some termite and white ant poison... we know that there are termites in the area, there are stumps that have been ridden with the little pests... and if I ever discover any, I want to be ready to add a little bit of the poison to their food to hopefully nuke their home base!

Meanwhile, a slight detour from the local Bunnings... a trip to the local tiler/roofing supplier. To pick up some spare tiles for the roof... nothing serious, we have an appointment coming up to replace our in-roof gas heating with a reverse-cycle electric system... the old ducting is seriously shredded, and everything could use an upgrade. We managed to pick up an interest free 10 year government loan for this one... something that is offered to help wean households off gas and onto newer and more efficient infrastructure.

Hmmmm... meanwhile, in the herb garden. What a difference about ten centimetres makes! That little basil plant in the bottom of the photo gets no rain as it is covered by the eaves. Just 10 centimetres away, you would have wet soil... so, a quick dig up and transplant, and soon I hope it will be thriving as much as as that runaway parsley!
