Storms...

The weather in Canberra (well, most of East of Australia) has been a touch wet and stormy in the past couple of weeks. That has made for some disasterous flooding in some areas of New South Wales... but thankfully, most of Canberra has avoided the huge deluge. But still, a lot of rain, and lots of wind as well!

Given the amount of trees that we have on our block, I'm a little bit nervous when it is strong winds and wet weather... if we are unlucky, it could lead to an uprooted tree... and those things are pretty damn heavy! Even if it isn't the whole tree, a major tree limb is still heavy enough to cause some serious damage!

Thankfully, this time around... the wind was pretty strong... but we had no major issues. Lots of cleaning up to do... lots of smaller branches to collect and tidy up, to be fed into the mulcher, to be added to mulching piles that are slowly making their way out onto the ground!

Just down the road, you can see how waterlogged the clay soil is... you have pools and mini rivers forming, and where the stormwater is overloaded (or clogged), you end up with small lakes!

I have been around the house, and there are only a couple of areas that still pool up a bit, and those are on the list of things to fix up. But for the moment, the water does make out off our block via a channel that goes around the house. Not ideal, but it will work for now until we get around to that section.

However, it does make the end point of that little river (near the curb) very very soggy... and with that sogginess, as soon as the Sun comes out... it is a peak growing environment for WEEDS! ARRRRRGH.... At the moment, I'm not dealing with that part... but I'm starting to wonder if I should start on it... otherwise we might also end up with fallen little treelets and damaged fencing.

Every time that I turn the soil or the mulch, I'm completely amazed by the amount of life that is down there! This HUGE centipede was happily minding its own business until the moment I decided that I was going to move its home from the mulching pile over to the ground cover!

We are looking out for some more screening cover for our house. Our parents in law had bought us a few of these little trees/shrubs that will eventually grow to shield our garage space (carport)... and we are looking to plant a few more of them around the house to give us a touch more privacy.

... yep, the storms are not only a problem for gardens... but also for road infrastructure. Right now, driving around Canberra and regional New South Wales is a dangerous excercise in dodging deep and wide potholes! I've hit one at speed (near 100 kph) and wasn't particularly keen on the jolt it sent through the vehicle... however, it doesn't look like I took any visible damage. But I'm starting wonder when I will shred a tyre on one of these. I probably should double check that the spares are ready to be loaded on!
