Show Preparations!

This weekend will be the last event of the season for Mrs. Denmarkguy and I to go set up a booth and sell our creative wares at another Holiday Market.

Whereas it is a lot of work to do these things, it also ends up supplementing our meager income at an expensive time of the year. And we basically need every penny we can get!

We started doing these things about 12 years ago, and committing to events is also a good source of motivation to take our respective artistic ventures more seriously.

In a typical year we will do maybe 8-10 shows, some of which are fairly lucrative, the remainder "just about good enough" to warrant our being there. On the whole, I like shows because it is easier to sell something when you can actually put it into someone's hands, as opposed to just showing photographs online.

The whole process of — basically — creating and setting up a miniature shop in about 90 minutes gets easier with practice. In the early days I'd be pretty frantic and perpetually worried about forgetting something, starting from about a week before the event.

Much of the world believes that artists "shouldn't care" about selling their work — art for art's sake, and all that — but I have never subscribed to that philosophy. I think it is a good and healthy thing to want to sell your works and a boost to self-esteem, as well.

I enjoy events like this because it is a chance to meet people face-to-face in a way you just don't get to when you're dependent on online sales, only. The feedback is great to have and helps me know whether I'm going in the right direction.

Is it a lot of work, of course... and art is not that easy to sell — it's basically a "luxury" to most people, something they might enjoy looking at but don't necessarily feel the need to buy.

Anyway, I am looking forward to this weekend, and once it is over then we have the holidays. Doesn't leave a whole lot of time for blogging, but I guess we don't always get what we want. I will try to post whenever I can!

Lately, I have felt rather tired and low energy, which is not so unusual for me, as this is the busy season for several of my businesses and so there is little time for rest and enjoyment.

And, on that light note, I shall call it a day and head off to sleep. Sorry for the slightly odd and rambling post... I'll be back to normal soon!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great Friday!
