Sorcery, Science and SmartWatch

in WORLD OF XPILARlast month (edited)

Magic is generally perceived as a perfomace-based trick, an illusion created by sleight of hands or psychological manipulation.

I believe it's more than mere parlour tricks. No, I'm not going towards witch-craft or black magic. It's another realm in which I don't want to step because it creeps me out and I'm not equipped enough to write about it.

Is anyone familiar with a fictional world - Grishaverse? I don't think anyone reads fiction here. So, let me introduce...

Grishaverse is a universe of Grisha who are human but have the power to manipulate matter and energy. They despise calling their powers, "Magic". They believe their abilities are the extensions of the natural world which is why they call it "Small Science."

Today's science was once considered sorcery in the past which makes me think real magic is small/big science.

  • Flying carpets to airplanes
  • Telepathy to telecommunication
  • Magic wands to remote controls
  • Magic mirrors to video calls
  • Oracle spirits to Google and now AI

It's funny how one's mind works. My smart watch has finally arrived and I can't help thinking about magic and stuff. No, it doesn't have any magical features which aren't already proven to be "small science".

Maybe "talking to my hand" did it and I had to show you what kind of mental pictures were running in my mind.

I'm not promoting smartwatches. Just got a little carried away with a new gadget in my hand which is making me feel more "magical" since it arrived last afternoon.

I don't know if it will help me stay fit but it looks gorgeous. So, I will have no regrets about spending on something that wasn't an absolute necessity. I also made a wise decision of not spending $250 on a Garmin watch and instead bought from a local brand at a very reasonable price with more or less the same features.

I don't know how much accurate it is but the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation features are a win for me.

Alhamdulillah, I don't have any cardiac or pulmonary disease but it's good to be able to keep a check on vitals anywhere and anytime.

There are many interesting features but it's not a review so I'm not sharing those. If you are interested you can check up on "Zero Lifestyle's Vision."

I didn't lie when I told you how hot summers are here. Ok, this app exaggerates 1 degree. But still, it's hot.

I know all these feauteres are already on my phone but I don't like carrying it all the time because it's a big distraction.

With this magical band on my hand, I may not be able to summon the spirits or cast spells but I can get things done by tapping on my wrist.

I know it's nothing innovative for most of you but this is my contemporary magic, so let the woman enjoy.

Yes, these watches have a magical fascination for me too, but more from a technical point of view. :-))
It's fascinating what these little things can do... and in some situations they are actually helpful... and can save lives.

I recently had a conversation with an elderly lady who told me that her smartwatch saved her life: One day she had fallen and was alone in her flat. She couldn't get up and couldn't call anyone for help. Her watch asked her whether she had fallen and whether it should call the emergency services... which it did. That's great, isn't it?! Her children deliberately set it up... and they did exactly the right thing! I didn't know that these watches could do that!

Personally, though, I'm not a fan of watches (on my wrist). I haven't worn a (not smart) watch before and I'm not going to start now... although they can do crazy things.
But I do understand that some people love them. They are now also available in numerous design versions, so there is a watch for everyone.

Anyway, yours looks pretty good :-)

The technical aspect fascinates me too. Glad to know that we share the same sentiments for these magical bands. 😀

I didn't know a watch could tell if its wearer had fallen. I have to check if mine can do that.
Technology is sometimes overwhelming but we can't deny its usefulness.

This is my first smartwatch and I have never been a watch person before. But I don't know what got into me this time and I only pray that I don't ditch it after a few days when the fun wears off. 😅

There is certainly a huge variety of smartwatches in the market. It took me over a month to pick this one.

Glad you like it. ((:

I definitely like your watch. Just one little thing. The temperature - Does it have a sensor of it's own or it gets the information of location via internet through your phone or something.

Well it told my bp the other day with quite an accuracy... Should I invest in one? Hmmm.... I like the metal ones... You know the old school wrist watches! Tough decision, but I guess things will become clearer once I have the revenue for the purchase 😉🫣

It gives weather updates based on current location.

Wouldn't a temperature sensor tell my body temperature only? 🤔

Yes, I think it tells blood pressure accurately.

I know you are a watch lover. You can easily get one in metal. Although silicone bands are more comfortable to wear for longer hours.

Believe me, your smart watch is not exaggerating about weather, it's really that hot.
I got its back for showing this harsh truth.

P.S: your watch looks nice😀

Oh yes, the weather is actually this harsh. 🥲

Pretty!
For my part, I'm still steadfastly against constant monitoring by electronics, but I don't begrudge you the pleasure of the piece. Not everyone is an old lady who misses out on the zeitgeist and prefers to dig in the dirt... 😉

let the woman enjoy

It's a deal!

I also don't exactly enjoy the constant monitoring by electronics. It's the distraction that I despise. The watch has some basic features which means I don't have to pick up my phone for every tiny thing.

I don't keep up with the zeitgeist either. It was my husband actually who was looking for an aviator watch which developed my interest in smartwatches. He still hasn't gotten for himself and I'm wearing one. 😅

You have your style lady that defines your unique personality. (:

He still hasn't gotten for himself and I'm wearing one.

Haha, that's exactly what I've known from home - for years.
The last highlight was an e-bike. I've always said I don't want one (yet), I'm too young (well, 20-year-olds ride these bikes too...). Ralf has been looking at offers for hours for weeks, watching videos with opinions, reading comparisons... I have been riding a beautiful e-bike for eight weeks and am very satisfied... ;-)

That looks so cool. Do you have the same ride?

Yes, I bought exactly this bike. I love the very classic style.

I was going to request you to share your picture with the bike...

You look 20. 😉

You look 20.

Damn, now you've exposed the fake photo a little too quickly... 😉

I'm sorry but the Voldemort picture is too funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Are you a Potterhead? I think you areee. Answer this question without looking it up :p

What dragons did Harry and Cedric get in the Triwizard tournament xDd

That was supposed to be funny. Voldemort in glasses.... 🤣

Ummm... I'm a Potterhead but my memory is not very good. Harry's I remember... Hungarian Horntail, but can't recall Cedric's.

Norwegian Rigeback keeps coming to my mind but I think that was Hagrid's Nobert-a.

It was Swedish Short snout
