Brunch, Bric a Brac & a Birthday at Dassiesfontein!

Last week was Dave's birthday and because we are both pretty busy most of the time, we did not really have a chance to plan anything specific, so opted for a mini road trip and a casual farm style brunch for just the two of us. I think as you get old(er) the desire to go "all out" somewhat dwindles, lol and an easy going meal with those we care to share our time with will generally suffice, lol.

"Dassiesfontein" is about a ten minute drive from where we stay and a lovely drive at that! It is always nice to hit the road out here because there is generally very little but open view on the road! Way out in the middle of nowhere is this little farm stall that really isn't little at all! It actually started out MANY moons ago... some 12 + years if I am not mistaken and it was nothing more than two wagons parked on the side of the road selling homemade goods. Well, grown they have!

When you arrive you are greeted with an endless array of... what's the word I am looking for here... "STUFF!" lol - yip, just stuff, stuff and more stuff - as far as the eye can see. Coal stoves, braai goodies, enamel crockery, decor, preserves, clothes, toys - I could go on, lol! The place is HUGE!!! The main area is where the farm stall restaurant is located and that was where we started because, well - we were hungry!

The menu is a simple one with all the choices being relatively homely style meals, but we were there for their breakfast which is probably what they are best known for! Everything is served in old enamel crockery... from the milk, tea, coffee and even the breakfast - which admittedly, does make it a little challenging to eat as the enamel bowls are quite small, but nothing that a skilpadjie on the plate won't fix!

What is a skilpadjie you ask?! Well, it is definitely not everybody's cup of tea... but being a liver lover and a fat lover, they are riiiight up my alley! A traditional South African food - skilpadjies, which also go by other names such as muise and vlermuise which is essentially lambs liver wrapped in netvet (caul fat).

The liver is normally minced and then ingredients such as coriander, onion and Worcestershire sauce are added. The seasoned and minced liver are then made into little oblong balls and wrapped in the netvet and held together with a tooth pick and normally cooked on the braai - ie. over wood coal. Not the best photo below, as the lighting in the restaurant was not great... but THAT is a skilpadjie!

hmmmm... that did not work so well...
here is a better shot which I grabbed from here

Anyhooo... I love them, and lucky for me - Dave does not, so I got two, haha! Breakfast is a pretty hearty affair... starting with porridge and orange juice and then your main of traditional bacon and eggs, boerewors, skilpadjie and fried tomato accompanied with freshly made farm bread, butter and preserves and then finished off with tea or coffee. Needless to say, we were both stuffed.

This always works out well, as once you have finished stuffing your face and all the bellies are satisfied - you can then take a nice slow meander through the farm shop!

Walking through the "shop" is like going through an old house where each room has a different theme and is filled with different stuff. I did not take photos of even half the rooms we walked through because it would have turned this post into a thesis, so I just took shots of the ones which had stuff in them, which appealed to me.

Honestly, You need a full wallet and an entire day to fully enjoy yourself in that place. I know if I could, I would walk out with half the shop! They have such beautiful decor items and also GARDEN STUFFFFF which I know, you know... I would LOVE to get my hands on!

I was actually quite proud of myself, because apart from breakfast... I bought absolutely NOTHING! Not one single item, nicknack or trinket, or plant pot, or... anything. I could cry actually, lol - but my wallet was happy! Regardless, it is always fun to explore such places and when coupled with a good breakfast... even better! The birthday boy was happy and for that, so was I!

What a beautiful place!
I've heard of it but I have not been there. Seems like it might just be worth the trip... one day.

Okay, you are better than me. There is no ways that I would have left without buying anything. (•ิ‿•ิ)

PS: You are no longer in a club

It really is lovely and DEFINITELY worth the trip! :D

Okay, you are better than me. There is no ways that I would have left without buying anything. (•ิ‿•ิ)

It required a LOT of restraint, lol

PS: You are no longer in a club

I honestly have NO idea what that means??!! I don't know anything about clubs or what that involves - or that I was ever even a part of one hehe - helpppp :D

Umh... you forgot.

After this you made a power up and on numerous verifications it showed that you were in Club5050. Curators and communities with booming votes cannot support you if you are not in club.
Here is a post that explains the club status;

Hi @patjewell :)

I feel like a right chop to be honest - and thanks for the clarification, lol! But no... I did not forget, I just completely misunderstood the ENTIRE thing!!! I was under the impression that what was being referred to was the standard payout options. Ie. Full power up, 75/25 (as in some goes to null) and then 50/50

That is what I thought was "required" in order to fall into those respective categories... which is why I continued to use the club50/50 tag - but then a little while ago another user came into my comments to tell me that I was incorrectly using the club5050 tag... which even further confused me because no additional explanation was offered.... so, in order to avoid any issues - I just stopped using the tag because I was clearly not "getting it" lol.

So... I have now had a look at the post link you shared and the other 50/50 post which was linked within that one and the penny has finally dropped, lol.

A concept which makes complete sense in the bigger vision of growing the success of Steem so I 100% respect that.

I will do my utmost to respect and contribute to that on as regular a basis as is realistically feasible for me. I am thrilled to see Steem breathing new life and am absolutely on board with contributing to it's growth and success - but I also need to try and balance that with contributing to keeping the roof over our heads.

But yes... thank you for sharing that link - it made a LOT more sense of things for me, lol. I am not sure if you shared it previously, but I clearly missed it if you did. Apologies if that was the case.

Hope you have an awesome Tuesday xxx

What a beautiful post.
I could actually picture myself standing in this shop. It's really really my cup of tea. Lovely ambience.

A little selfish of me. But you will something similar in my latest post about the steemit blog proposal 🫣😉

It is indeed a gorgeous place!!! I think most women would agree haha!!! - The men, perhaps less so :D

A little selfish of me. But you will something similar in my latest post about the steemit blog proposal 🫣😉

Was planning to head over there shortly. Saw the post and upvoted it yesterday, but was not able to sit and read at the time - though I knew it would be worth the read because it was yours haha!

On my way shortly.... :)

Happy Valentines Day lovely!

Glad Dave had a lovely birthday! Can't beat a Dassies brekkie, I look forward to one of those 😍 Though I'll pass on the skilpadjie too haha!!
