The dove that didn't make it home...

Death is never a pleasant thing to witness and I today was no exception. We have a LOT of birds in our garden as I have mentioned often in my posts, as I feed them all daily. As we had some rainy weather rolling in earlier, the the birds tend to get really active “prepping” themselves for whatever mother nature is bringing their way.

We have a few sliding glass doors on the perimeter of our house and do tend to have problems with the birds flying into them - especially in the sunny weather, when they don’t actually see the doors.

We have tried so many different methods to try and counter this, because it is never pleasant to see one of them injured from flying into them, but preventative methods, though relatively effective - do not eradicate the problem entirely.

Today, was unfortunately one of those days and I am sad to say, likely the most brutal I have seen (or heard for that matter). The BANG against the glass was so loud as a poor dove hit the glass :(

Definitely dead on impact, but what made this particular instance hit a little harder was that there was a really large pool of blood which began to seep out from the underside of his head as he lay there. Then I noticed that there was a whole lot of bird seed lying everywhere around him, so I can only assume he/she had food stored in it’s “crop pouch” - something which I just Googled now, because I did not think that doves stored grain food in their “mouths”.

Seeing this whole scene, just really broke my heart. The bad weather was setting in, this birdie had obviously collected all sorts of “whatever” from “wherever” and was heading “home” - possibly even back to a nest to babies… it just really, really made me sad. Just like that - their life was over and the lives of those around them, impacted forever. A pretty REAL dose of perspective, right there.

I am embarrassed to admit that despite how much I love the birds, I have come to discover that I think I am actually a little (or a lot) scared of them. I have no idea why and it makes no sense to me whatsoever…but if they come near me (like if they come into the house) - I absolutely freeze with fear. Its stupid I know… because I literally do everything I can to “invite” them into our garden space… because I love having them!

Anyhoo, so I went to call Jude to come help me get rid of the dove because we have a dog… as most of you already know. He is much braver than his mom and had no trouble picking up the dove to go lie it somewhere that the dog cannot get to. But poor child - in this process, he ended up getting injured himself.

We have two sliding doors which lead on to the garden area. One is an enclosed space (where the dove died) and the other with stairs down to the garden. He picked up the dove and moved from the one set of sliding glass doors to the other - but mom had not opened the exit doors because she was busy holding the dog back… needless to say, Jude had a full frontal collision with the door - bird and all… and now has a thumb which is rather swollen.

Eish - as we like to say here in South Africa! What a week! I mentioned in my last post that things happen in “three’s” I hope this was No. 3, because I am over it already! Super sad about the little dove that never made it home. It really makes you think about life when you are faced with death… and how fleeting it is. We never know when our time will come, so we should really try and keep things in perspective. Appreciate who we have in our lives and make sure they know it too.

❤❤❤

Until next time...

I know you do :) and I promise you that the day I can, I will. I just simply cannot right now. I am struggling to make month ends needs as it is and am constantly looking for additional sources of income... so really just not an option atm unfortunately.

I understand all too well as I read so many posts of hardship every day where Steemit fills that gap. In the meantime, just keep on doing what you are doing.

PS: Get hold of me. Maybe I can help you with some extra work.

So true @patjewell. More so now than ever before - and all over the world too!!!

Thank you so much for reaching out - you are a very sweet soul! At this point in time, my hours are already not enough... I have a lot of my own endeavors which I am trying to get off the ground - which is where my heart lies, but as with anything new, it is a gradual process... so in the interim I am actually trying to find ways to better invest in Steem to help improve my situation as well as then supporting the coin itself.

I need more hours in a day to do all the things I am trying to do - not complaining, but (and I am sure you can relate) sometimes I wish I could split myself up haha!!

I have kind of reached the stage in my life where what I "do" with my hours in the day needs to feel right in my heart. I spent most of my life until recently, just ploughing my way through the hours of the day to make ends meet and it was soul destroying. I know this way is the "harder option" but the quality of my life is something which I refuse to deny anymore... if that makes sense :)

I do very much appreciate you reaching out though. It is nice to not feel "alone"... you know?!

Hope you have a lovely Tuesday!
