Celtic knotwork - knot drawing process summary I

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 months ago

Hi friends,

Understanding and acquiring skills in using the grid to place patterns is crucial and very useful, not only in knot work but also in other artistic domains such as Islamic art, pre-Columbian art or the field of perspective.
We have here a 4 x 4 cell grid, this is the minimum number of cells needed to draw a knot.
The red dots serve as a reference to follow when placing the patterns. With enough practice, it will not be necessary to point them out later, but for now, it is very useful.

See how joining the red dots we draw the basic pattern to make the interlaced loop of the basic knot.

By repeating this process around the grid we get to draw the knot. Notice that we need to draw one pattern, and sixteen cells to draw a knot.

Counting only the external cells of the grid, we see we need two cells to draw an arc, and we need two arcs by each side of the grid to draw a knot.
The common factor between the number of arcs per side is 2.

We have obtained two endless loops.

Interlacing the loops we obtain the knot.
