SKETCHING A FLOWER.jpg

Hi friends!

I would like to show you some steps to draw a flower like a Magnolia, a flower with delicate, semi-transparent petals.
This is a sketch, we cannot consider it as a definitive drawing but rather as a sketch to study how we could represent such a flower with the material and tools we have used until now.
If you want to practice I suggest you search for some pictures of similar flowers and try to apply the steps I showing to represent your flower in a drawing.

-----------------------------------------------

The drawing paper is the same used in the previous lessons 102-Lesson and 104-Lesson a fine grain bond paper and the size is A5.
I used two pencils here, first an HB lead pencil, then a 3B lead pencil
A kneadable eraser.
A paper towel.

By drawing smooth, straight lines, I define the shape and size on the drawing paper of this flower. Drawing the first traces as straight strokes makes it easier the first approach to shapes.See lesson 102

Once we have defined the shape and size of the flower on our drawing paper, we can proceed to soften the shapes, make round the angles and add some details on the petals and also on the stem.

At this stage, we can define some dark areas with soft strokes with the HB pencil (so far we have not used another) and leaving the lighter areas untouched.
03.jpg

To make the petals whiter, we'll darken the background by drawing diagonal strokes starting from the edges of the flower.
04.jpg

Repeat the previous process but in the opposite sense.

Then perpendicular strokes and so on until uniform darkness is obtained.

To finish this study sketch I use a softer pencil, 3B hardness, to obtain a tone even darker in the upper background and to give some touches of black to some lower parts of the petals and to the stem.
I blended the background strokes with towel paper, as shown in the previous lesson.

I wish you a very nice day and good exercise!

And if you like to colour your drawings, I recommend the interesting and useful Color and Light classes of @fumansiu whose concepts you can apply both with traditional and digital techniques.!

Or maybe you want to make a beautiful watercolour with your drawing!
Well, our friend @arcoiris is back with his magnificent watercolour lessons.
