The recorded history of Trincomalee dates back to more than two and a half thousand years, beginning with the settlement of civilians associated with the Koneswaram temple in pre-modern times. One of the oldest cities in Asia, it served as an important maritime port in the island's international trade history with Southeast Asia. The Siddhar Tamil Medical University, founded by Agasthiyar, "Agathiyar Institute" helped to spread the Tamil Thamraparnian culture across the continent from its suburban village of Ganguveli, some of the earliest medical research in Asia.
