My Path in Oil Painting.
Hi everyone!
A discussion with @ranartblog gave me the desire to take stock of my path in oil painting.
I will always remember my first attempt : it was in 2016 (or 2017?), I did a painting of Amanda Seyfried :
I didn't had canvas at that time, I simply used a thick drawing paper, and some oil paintings that I bought for the occasion.
I didn't had place too, so I put a big newspaper on my bed and starting to paint into it lol.
I was very proud of this painting, as it was my first attempt, and given the limited means I had.
After, I continue some others attemps, still on paper. Very quickly I realize how limited it was, because it give a rough aspect, not pleasant, and especially not adapted: the paper crumpled very quickly.
So, I tried to be more professionnal and buy canva.
Hmm.. I thought naively that it would solve all my problems 😆
I found the canva very difficult to manage. I didn't know yet that we must use a base on the canvas to make the painting easier to manage.
So... I didn't remember clearly but I think that at this moment, I was asking myself if the paper wasn't easily, finally 🤣
So, this next painting was made with a canva, without base and without knowledge about all of it.
And... I hate it so much!
I don't think I already present this painting on steemit, because I never liked it ; first, the proportions are uncorrect, and I saw it too late.
As you can see on the photo reference :
It was all the more a disappointment for me that I wanted to paint Lana del Rey, my idol at the time... fail 🤣
Also, I had a lot of difficulty to make this painting for the reasons I mentioned, but also due to the fact that I could not manage the paint, the flows, the mixtures, ... all this gives a very dull result.
It was all the more frustrating because with my very first painting, I was able to handle it all so easily. Maybe it was beginner's luck?
My second attempt on canva was the painting of a forest.
After the trauma of the first attempt with canva, this time I learned about oil painting more seriously and I bought base to put on the canva, before painting.
And it was so much more easy.
I could feel the paint sliding on the canvas.
But, despite everything, I was moderately satisfied with this painting. Again, it looks dull, I was kind of stingy with the amount of paint. It still looks like a beginner in many ways.
And that's all !
After that, I didn't do any more tests.
One thing that demotivated me was the infrastructure required for oil painting. At the time, I had been told that I had to clean my brushes with white spirit, the smell was unbearable.
But after talking with @ranartblog, I now know that we can simply use dishwashing liquid, it works on all oils and greases.
So... now I'm tempted to start again. I don't know when yet, it will require some small adjustments, but I really want to get back to the pleasures of oil painting :)
Thank you for reading, see you soon for next creations! 😊
To reach this level with so few attempts, is an accomplishment.
The second portrait is actually quite good. A bit more work on the skin color, and a change to the dress color, and it is beautiful.
For landscape, it is really a matter of many attempts. But already you are doing great. It is hard to draw rocks, and you did it.
Here is something I tried when I just started:
And, here is something after MANY attempts:
Thank you. Yes, we didn't expect at first how much rocks are difficult to paint!
Waw, you're painting is just breathtaking.
Thank you :o)
Hi @pipoune, that is beautiful post and I like your Oil painting. Despite of your first steps you have shown your passion to create and experiment with new art medium and reached very good results. The painting of Lana Del Rey is well done and I do not think you need to hide it.
By the way, I noticed that this post is posted only on Steemit which is really good, try not to double post in both platforms, if you will be consistent here you will get regular visits of Steemcurators too. By the way try to use country tag like#belgium. It is for Steemcuratos to recognise what country people coming from.
Yes, my painting of Lana can't be that bad, but you know, we're very hard on ourselves 😅
I think that my requirement on this one provides from the fact that it was my idol and that I know her face by heart.
Yes, I will try to do more exclusive content as possible, with the time I have available.
Thanks for the tag advice, I didn't know it.
Yes, been critical for ourselves we improve our skills, but also when we do portraits of someone who we like makes it even more motivating.
This is a very good result not only for the first time. There is no limit to perfection, you can only strive for it. I think you definitely need to resume your work with oil paints on canvas.
I wish you success!
Thank you so much! 😊
You are welcome 🖐 😊
These are fantastic!
Thank you! 😉
