Hello my dear Steemians,

This is the new account “Planetwild” by @stef1 and @myskye. This account is about collecting Steem for the PlanetWild project. That's why I'm going to post once a day. Everything we get together here (Steem, SBD, SP) goes to the project. Then let's see what we can do here...

There are many different sharks out there, but do you know the cat shark?

Cat shark

Cat sharks, belonging to the family Scyliorhinidae, are small, bottom-dwelling sharks commonly found in temperate and tropical oceans. These nocturnal predators typically inhabit shallow waters and are recognized for their slender bodies and distinctive cat-like eyes, which help them see in low light. Catsharks are primarily known for their gentle nature and feeding on fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates. With a variety of species, they exhibit interesting behaviors such as camouflage and can often be seen resting on the ocean floor or hiding in crevices.

Cat sharks, face various threats that put their populations at risk. Overfishing, habitat loss, and environmental changes have contributed to declining numbers for many species. Conservation efforts are essential to protect their habitats and regulate fishing practices to ensure the survival of these important marine creatures. Awareness and research are crucial to advocate for their protection and promote sustainable practices in the fishing industry.

The North Sea

The North Sea is home to several shark species, including the lesser-spotted cat-shark (Scyliorhinus canicula), the spiny dogfish, and the basking shark, which is one of the largest fish in the world. Lesser-spotted cat sharks are common along the seabed, while spiny dogfish are more widespread and often found in deeper waters. Basking sharks, migratory filter feeders, can be spotted in the North Sea during the summer months as they follow plankton blooms. While these sharks are generally not dangerous to humans, they play essential roles in the marine ecosystem.

Raising baby sharks - Mission 17

Sharks often cause fear, but they’re actually the ones in danger. In Malta, more than half of all shark species are at risk of extinction, mirroring a global problem. Shark populations worldwide have dropped by over 70% in just 50 years. The main reason: overfishing. While sharks rarely are the intended target, they often end up as bycatch.

Catsharks are threatened by us, humans. Even when they’re not directly hunted, they often get caught in drift nets. Fortunately, Greg Nowell, founder of Sharklab-Malta, realized that these sharks have a characteristic that might give the species an extra chance for survival: they lay eggs. He discovered that even if the mothers are already dead at the fish market, their fertilized eggs can still be saved and hatched.

Hello dear @stef1

Just to enquire
Is this raising baby sharks from the eggs is this first time done in the lab.

Yes, it is always exciting to help some species to survive, that we human have to do :)

I think I love this concept of this baby shark but I will like to ask, hope they will be able to be retained for so many years

Yes, there are many different species that we have to concentrate on, of course for all the work it is good to have engage people and financial support of government :)
